I think I'm settling into the idea now that Patterson is an ATG talent and it takes something special to beat him. Only Liston and Ali proved to be his master, and whilst I think there's a fair few ATG fighters who beat him, I can't pick Buddy to do the job. In my minds eye I see a demolition job like Spinks against Cooney, I think Patterson completely picks him apart and stops with an accumulation of shots.
Interesting matchup...feel like Patterson would fall ...a lot. But he gets up and up again till he finishes Buddy off.
The only fly in the ointment is Baers big size advantage added to the fact that he was no featherfist. It's a tough, but winnable fight for Patterson, but it's also a winnable fight for Buddy Baer. I honestly can't say who i would pick.
If I was managing Patterson, then Buddy Baer would need Sony Liston level dominance, in order to get a tittle shot. I would want no part of him!
I know, but in this case it's size combined with a very solid HW punch and greater physical strength. Patterson could hit but he was no Joe Louis and Joe Louis had a better chin.
Yeah, if I was managing Floyd, I wouldn't go out of my way to have him fight Buddy Baer. He would either have to be a very dominant contender or he would have to be the reigning champion and the only way for my fighter to get the title would be to go through Buddy Baer.
Patterson is quality, very quick, very technically sound, strong for his weight and and he has an excellent jab.
But Buddy wouldn't try to box with him, he would slug and he had much better chin. I also pick Patterson, but this wouldn't be easy.
