The Crushing Cooney Fighting Machine of the second minute of the fourth round vs Larry Holmes in June, 1982 would quickly and violently make mincemeat of Vitali in 1 rd. I have absolutely nothing in Gerrys history to back up this statement, but boy, did you see him beat up Ken Norton? Wowwee! Cooney in 1.
Prime Gerry has a puncher's chance early on, his big left shook Foreman up close on one occasion in the first round of their encounter. If he can land it, he can hurt Vitali too but Klitschko had a good chin so he should survive it. Cooney either didn't show much of a jab though or neglected it and was largely reliant on the left hook to body and head so Vitali will control the range of the fight and look to break Gerry down from distance. Gerry didn't have a great chin and Vitali's constant punches and workate should see him take this in maybe eight or nine rounds with Klitschko scoring a couple of knockdowns in the process. It could be a Vitali vs Sanders-like finish with Gerry taking heavy punishment up against the ropes
To me prime Cooney is better than than that version of Peter and old/fat Sanders. So this would have been Vitali’s best win if he could pull it off.Would have been an interesting fight.I am going to pick Vitali by close decision. His stamina and high punch output will pull it out for him.Cooney would probably have the better in the first half of the fight
Vitali wrecks him. Cooney is just not fast enough nor skilled enough. He's got size and a punch, but that's not really enough to deal with somebody like Klitschko.
He could not put Lewis away and hit him flush.Vitali is an arm puncher. This is not one of the usual midget VITALI fought
VITALI is much more vulnerable against fighters his own size. You check his record how he did and come back. His lean back defense is ill advised against fighters his own size. prime cooney is not a herbie never has been Hide or Kirk the whale Buba Johnson. This forum has gone to new lows recently, pathetic
Good fight early on as Vitali would get hit and Cooney could punch. But Vitali was way more durable and I think he begins to club Gerry around the 5th round and prob stops him around the 9th
Cooney never fought like a long guy,he could not use the long distance, he fought in the mid and close distance. Vitali destroys him
