Over 1000 days mandatory challenger

    Dillian Whyte did more than enough to earn a shot for the WBC title...but...I’m getting a bit tired of hearing this 1000 day thing getting chucked about when he has had opportunities to fight for titles, and the fact he only got the mandatory position officially after beating Rivas.

    Whyte turned down Pulev for the opportunity to be the IBF mandatory because he didn’t want to fight in Bulgaria. For whatever reason he did not fancy that smoke. That was his choice, fair do’s, but you can’t be going round accusing Fury of ducking him etc At least Fury has travelled for his opportunities when he’s had to.

    He had a chance to fight Ortiz for a mandatory position and declined it to instead fight on British turf for PPV money. That’s understandable, their next fight could always be their last so it only makes sense to go for the prizefighter money. However, that was an opportunity all the same.

    He turned down a scrap with Usyk who is now mandatory to fight Joshua. Something about him not speaking English and having little profile and instead fights an opponent the casuals had never heard of, who speaks no English.

    He very publicly turned down an opportunity to fight for 3 world title belts in April 2019 over the figure Joshua was offering. Once again, you could argue that he knows his value and perhaps he had a point in deserving more from the slice of that pie, but that was an opportunity.

    The WBC are an absolute joke of a belt at the moment. He has been wronged by them but I just had to post this cos I expect this rubbish spouted by Whyte, Hearn, SKY, all the pundits and former fighters who are crawling up Smith’s backside to keep their jobs...but I don’t expect it on a boxing forum full of hardcore fans. I want him to do well. I’ll keep watching his fights like I watch all of Chisora’s, Dubois’s and Joyce’s. I expect him to spark Povetkin out in rematch and would love to see him in a proper world title fight...but it will be nice if it was without all the false hype and narrative so he can be enjoyed for what he is, in the same way we enjoy Del Boy.

    Hear what your saying but the argument to that would be why would he fight the likes of Pulev to be mandatory for the IBF, or Usyk to be mandatory for the WBO when he has already paid hundreds of thousands in sanctioning fees with the WBC ?

    I agree he could’ve forced a mandatory position but on the whole he probably should’ve had a shot

    Like @Twentyman said, last year Whyte rejected a shot at the unified WBA, WBO and IBF belts at Wembley in front of a record crowd against AJ. It would’ve been a huge grudge fight with some serious PPV loot on top but he turned it down based on the rematch % split. If it was really about him getting a title shot and he was confident of winning he could of negotiated a better split once champion.

    Brilliant post m8, my views exactly. Only thing annoying me more are those people who actually think Tyson Fury is scared to fight Whyte. Whyte has improved massively but he is not world class imo.

    Thanks mate. I felt the same. A 6”1, 18 stone slugger against a 6”9 boxer would only go one way, and that’s similar to the Chisora fights with Fury. They’re too small, and lack the skill to transition to the inside on to a tall fighter like Fury without getting hit and tied up. There are smaller heavyweights that do have the skills like a ‘prime’ Povetkin, Usyk, Hunter etc but Dillian is a plodder with clumsy, slow feet.

    It was interesting listening to Tyson talk on BT about how Whyte, Miller, Chisora, Takam etc could all chin each other on any given night. There are levels, and all these fighters can be enjoyed for what they are but we have enough knowledge on here not to buy into the hype and use our own eyes to judge a fighter, instead of getting drawn in on narratives. We need to see Fury, Joshua, Wilder and Usyk all fighting each other now. The likes of Whyte can wait in the wings and fight what’s left over.

    Aye, Looking at it from this point of view, if all the bollocks about Whyte being feared, ducked and will fight anyone at anytime was dropped I might be able to get onboard with him.

    Unfortunately this sort of **** sells, so I'm still pissing myself at Saturday night.

    I agree, there's lots to like about Whyte - but one criticism I have of him is his refusal to travel. Off the top of my head, all his big fights have been major Matchroom shows where he has every possible advantage.

    Joshua and Fury have both travelled for big fights (Joshua albeit the 'home fighter' on a Matchroom show). Then there's people like Usyk who've made a career out of travelling.

    I guess it's a similar situation to Wilder who, for the majority of his career, hasn't been a huge name. Whyte can make the most money headlining the O2 etc so I can understand it - but perhaps if he'd travelled he wouldn't have got a couple of the close decisions he's had during this '1000 days'. The Parker and Chisora 1 fights could easily have gone the other way if he wasn't the 'home' fighter. Then there's all the funny business with the Rivas fight.

    I don't think we should underestimate the marginal advantages that being the home Matchroom fighter provides.

    Whyte whilst has some standing to be aggrieved, has turned down opportunities. Like has been mentioned multiple times, him turning down the shot vs AJ due to money was just ridiculous - it was still a career high payday for him and the chance to be great - he simply turned it down because he didn't believe he would win and knew the gravy train is over once he got battered again.

    Again, turning down Ortiz messed him up, because Ortiz automatically got the next shot which shows the WBC wasn't messing around, and again to throw in the Pulev & Usyk rejections add to the case.

    He's fought very good competition over the last few years but lets not be mistaken - he has had chances to better his position that he has turned down.

    Long story short - I have no sympathy for the bloke.

    If only Eddie had a few more PPV stars so he didn't have to artificially manufacture Whyte into one..

    He was clearly on the weetabix. No coincidence that he got popped before the Rivas fight. Had he signed to fight Joshua that would have been earlier.
