Whoever lands their left hook first would probably win, two very good hookers, exciting fight, Louis was the better combo puncher so would have had an edge.
This thread always happens after a big or unexpected win. We put on rose tinted goggles and see things as we wished they were, rather than how they are. I’ve seen threads where “Tokyo Douglas” stops a prime version of everyone from Muhammad Ali to Godzilla. The truth is Joe Louis was 6’2 and 215 lbs. Povetkin is also 6’2 but 228. Povetkin isn’t much bigger. Joe Louis fought and took punches in the time of 6oz gloves. Yes Povetkin hits hard but there are modern safety measures implemented now that simply didn’t exist when Louis was getting hit by fists in horse hair gloves. To say Povetkin knocks him out with a few shots is, at best, hopeful. Joe Louis would most likely win a great fight somewhere around round 10.
These kids of threads just make me sad. Povetkin is just a run of the mill contender who's been around a long time, Joe Louis arguably the greatest heavyweight ever and because povetkin maybe has 10 pounds (of body fat) on Louis he is being picked to not only be competitive but to defeat Louis. Just pure blasphemy
Its a different time. In a current time, athletes are way different and bigger. Povetkin will outweight him by probably 25-30lbs. if both are in their best shapes. And they are pretty much the same height and same reach. At the highest level, even 5-10lbs can make a big difference.
I love Joe Louis but it is hard for me to believe that Povetkin has no chance against a guy who hit the deck against Braddock and Galento. Let's just say it would be a great fight and leave it at that.
No, he won that fight, and regardless, Huck would have beaten Braddock, a LHW with a chronically broken hand, and Galento, an obese 5'8" iceman, in the same night. I am not disrespecting Joe at all, and I did not even say that he would lose, but let's just say the truth about some things.
Yeah, we don't know to what extent whatever Povetkin was taking positively affected his performance. It's a huge factor to consider when transplanting modern fighters into older milieus. We know Louis was super fast and explosive without performance enhancers. Guys like Evander and Tyson, not so much.
Louis had his fair share of struggles, against lesser fighters than Huck, so it's probably best not to go down that route. And what similarities exactly do Huck and Louis have in common stylistically?
