The fight would have been at 4.30 am here in UK, a young un as i was at the time was out for the count in my bed. Watched it when it was on television and of course many times since.
Good shout. Imagine watching it live if you'd put a few quid on Buster? Mrs Ezzard would have had a new frock, that's for sure.
Not often I agree with you, rez, but that's not to say I don't enjoy reading your posts. In fact I had a little pop at you in this thread which I hoped you'd see and enjoy in the spirit in which it was intended. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...reputation-boosts.628055/page-6#post-20608385 But you're absolutely spot on here. What an outcome. What a story. What a performance. For me, it ends the debate who was the best heavyweight ever. As patchy as Ali's form was in the 70s, no other fighter that I have seen much footage of could have done what he did that night/morning, imo. All the best.
Precisely. I was watching from Tokyo and we used to call it - "Via Satellite Broadcast", remember that term?
Yes but back then they were crap ! and I remember the first live sat broadcast being a good one and it was a Wilfred Benitez fight . He was unknown over here then but it still attracted massive amounts of UK viewers
Great question. Personally to many to name..... Louis vs Scmeling #2 and Ali vs Forman would be my two though. Purely from a historical perspective , their probably isn't a fight as important as Louis -Schmeling #2 in history. Would Schmeling prove the Nazi's theory of European superiority? ( Though Schmeling himself didn't want any part of this) Beat Louis again effectively ruining his legacy? Would Schmeling see something else? Would Louis come out tentative from being taken apart in the first fight? The Rumble in the Jungle is a fight that still gives me goose bumps though I know the results of the fight. Too see Foreman annihilate Norton and Frazier and knowing the hell both those fighters gave Ali one would have no choice but to think Ali could literally get killed. I would've been scared as hell for Ali's safety. But when he won....Oh my God.
