I think he's absolutely right. Boxing probably would have been made illegal. Imagine 1986-89 218 pound Tyson with those horse hair gloves? Guys probably would have went flying out of the ring. Imagine prime Mike Tyson vs Philadelphia Jack O'Brien??

 

Could see him being knocked out by them. Looks doped up again.

Tyson is a bad match up for Johnson

Johnson excelled vs small limited fighters. Those guys rarely threw combinations, let alone the type of combinations that Tyson could throw.

Johnson's only chance is to catch incoming Tyson with uppercuts. But Johnson would need many of those to wear Tyson down.

No way can Johnson survive a six punch combination from Tyson.

Douglas was very very good at moving and throwing combinations himself, something that Johnson did not do. Douglas was accustomed to fighting guys who threw combinations. And Douglas had to land many dozens of hard punches to wear him down.

Johnson wasn't quick on his feet, he tried to out muscle guys in the clinch. He isn't out muscling Tyson. He has never seen the type of handspeed, power and combination punching that Tyson possesses.

I used to think someone like Sam McVea was comparable to Tyson, not as good, but pretty close. I based this on how McVea was physically built; he had a similar physical built to Tyson. But after having watched footage of him, McVea was nowhere near as quick, refined or defensively as good as Tyson.

I cannot imagine any pre Louis heavyweights beating a rampaging Tyson. He possessed a combinaion of handspeed, footspeed, power, combination punching, physical strength and defense that none of them have ever seen. The only guy that i give a 10% chance is Dempsey. Dempsey was as fast as Mike, probably tougher, and had plenty of power. But Dempsey was 25 lbs lighter, and probably didn't hit as hard as Tyson. If Dempsey can survive the first 6-7 rounds, he could win. But its a slim chance, 10% at most.

Tyson stops Jefferies, Johnson, and Tunney with ease. He absolutely destroys Sharkey, Schmeling and Carnera. Baer would probably rock him but Tyson would stop him the way Louis did. Tyson also stops Dempsey early but with a slim chance of Dempsey surviving and winning late (hard to see it tbh)

Tyson is the worst matchup for early heavyweights. I am a big fan of many earlier heavyweights but Tyson is the worst thing that could happen to them

 

This is misconception, Johnson fought a lot of big guys.

Almost 40 years old and fat Johnson moved very well against Willard. Johnson had stationary style, but it doesn't mean that he was slow. He could move very well when needed.

He outmuscled 230 lbs James Jeffries who was known for his grappling skills. He outmuscled powerful Sam McVea. Tyson wasn't known for his clinching work, Johnson would have clear advantage here.

 

I re- read the accounts of the Jeffries fight only yesterday and early as the 2nd rd Johnson was forcing Jeffries arms back and pinning them to his sides,the idea that he only showed superior strength later, as Jeffries tired is BS.
Johnson 's training clips reveal he was light on his feet and could move quickly when necessary ,but that his anticipation was so good he seldom needed to.

You can see that he had light feet against Moran as well, he countered him with lead left time and time again and made Frank missing his right hand.

Jack Johnson is one of the most misunderstood HW greats ever.

Johnson would play with him because like Holyfield Johnson was excellent infighter and guys like Dempsey and Jeffries would have big chance knocking him.
Aslo those guys back then were iron chinned,tougher,fearless with lot of stamina and to compare them with old scared LHW Spinks is only proof how Tysonites are stupid

 

I think Tyson would crush Johnson like an egg shell. Yes-- there is a chance for a first round KO. Best guess Tyson KO 3. Johnson has nothing to keep him off and could not control Tyson in a clinch. He might make him miss twice badly, when Tyson does his trademark bob and weave, dips low and comes back with a hook, but once this lands...

 

Also, it's false that fighters from that era didn't use head movement. Fitzsimmons relied mostly on head movement, Langford had very solid head movement as well. Not to mention more defensive minded fighters.
