Both in their primes. Would do you think the outcome of this would be? Id like to think Sergio due his hand speed and at athleticism, amazing counter punching and ring intelligence. (Thats not to say Monzon didnt) Monzon jab was arguably up their with Haglers sledgehammer to the face. Along with Monzon's ability to set up the right hand and of course he was a seriously tough man. Thoughts?
Both are Argentinians. I watched only a few fights of Monzon so I don't know much how great he was. All I know about him was Monzon was a classic World Champion at 160 before Hagler's era. Anyway I thought that Monzon could beat Martinez if they met. BTW, I think that you should compare Monzon with Hagler.
What in the **** did I just read?! Monzon would turn Sergio Martinez into a living corpse, he wouldn't even be in Monzons top 5 opponents. If it's 12 rounds Sergio might see the final bell, if it's 15 he gets finished brutally.
Though I have always admired Martinez as a fighter (and as just a down-to-earth good dude), he's far to hittable--despite his remarkable natural ability and speedy feet/hands-- for Monzon, who would undoubtedly find and stop his fellow countryman in the later rounds. I feel similarly about a Hagler-Martinez fight. Sergio is gifted enough to trouble any middleweight of the last 40-50 years, but a gritty, hard-nose technician with power like Hagler would find more than a few openings to exploit.
I give Sergio a great chance.. Monzon never fought anyone like Martinez.. The footwork of Martinez and the flat footing plodding of Monzon? Gotta give the edge to Martinez to win a decision
Did Monzon even fight any southpaws? At least something Martinez would have going for him is his unorthodox jab. How many southpaws jabbed as effectively and authoritatively as Martinez?
Its a fair point that Monzon did not face any southpaws in his title reign. Obviously the Hagler fight has been discussed ad nauseam and that's a fact that has been brought up. But look at how Pavlik was getting to Sergio before the cut. The other Williams and Cintron got their licks in despite losing wide. Of course once age and injuries were setting in decidedly average fightes like Barker and Macklin had plenty of moments. He just isn't that much of cutey. Monzon won't have to worry to much about how he is going to get to him. Its stemming the offensive variety and punching angles that puts people in knots, that's where guys have to issue. Carlos is far sturdier and defensively sound compared to the previous guys mentioned. He wont get frustrated, he won't panic. He will make it messy and rough went he its necessary, he will pick his shots from the outside when its time to do that. I can't see this beautiful man seeing the final bell. He has his moments early for sure, plenty of them but it wont matter in the end.
