Pretty good video. When I was young and teaching boxing, I was "great" on mitts. Over time I realized that it was just an ego trip on my part; it is, in my opinion, the case for most trainers that are "great" on mitts.
Most fighters pick up most of their bad habits while hitting the mitts. The routines become noteworthy for the choreography but fundamentally useless in a fight. At this point in time, I use the mitts to teach specific moves; I use these moves because they teach something universal, like closing distance, how your weight flows, or creating exit strategies. I use my body to give perspective, then we take it to the heavy bag.
This video shows something that is neglected. McGirt is watching the bag work and using it to teach. So many trainers do mitts and that is it. You can't neglect the floor work. You have to be there watching the shadowboxing, the heavy bag work, all of it.

Everything has it's place, but I'm not a fan of some mitt workouts I've seen. The type where the coach and fighter do a choreographed routine and the fighter doesn't pivot his feet seem useless at best and probably harmful to the fighter. They'll throw 15 punch combinations but all they do is move their arms, they neglect their feet and body. When trainers do that, their fighters tend to regress. IMO, if there is a "secret" to boxing it's that what the feet do is probably more important than the hands. If the trainer can use the mitts and watch the whole body of the fighter, and correct him, while catching punches then the mitts are a good tool, if the trainer can only watch the hands, the mitts are not so good.

Unless the guy using the mitts can watch the feet, and body of the fighter, I think the fighter would be much better off shadow boxing and hitting the heavy bag. Watching the fighter's feet and whole body, making corrections, while catching punches without getting hit is hard work for a trainer. A trainer has to be motivated to make it work.

Heavy bag definitely seems neglected today because of mitts. That's why you see less knock outs and more arm punches today IMO. Of course there are exceptions watching G on YouTube hit the bags is pretty awsome for one.

I can see McGirts point. I cringe watching this video. Other than the Mayweather esq choreography, is anybody impressed by this type of mitt work?

That guy was trying to hit Yarde with the mitts, luckily he couldn't land anything. The mitts are not made for punching and there are a lot of sharp edges on them, there could have been a bad cut. I also didn't see the point of the trainer hitting (actually slapping) him to the body with the mitts, it sounds good, but it's just a slap...Maybe this workout was just for the camera and their real workouts are completely different?

I think they aid in sharpening reflexes a bit. Mcgirts a good trainer but plenty I would consider better than him do use mitts so I disagree that they are pointless

    that interviewer was annoying

i didnt read the book but my brother said that the arc of boxing mentioned mitts not being used in the old days and that the rocky movies made them more popular

im gonna guess the mitts became popular because its cheaper to have mitts than have an abundance of heavy bags and takes up less space

i know a criticism is that you cant see the feet and fully body movement but i guess in a one on one type of session you could have a guy hold them and the main coach as the observer
