Mike Rossman vs John Conteh, Both Prime, 15 Rounds. The Mike Rossman of his title winning WBA title fight against Victor Galindez, vs The 1974 John Conteh of his WBC title win over Jorge Ahumada.
Conteh. I didn't see the fight when Rossman beat Galindez, but I read about it in Ring, I believe. I either read it at the library, which only had Ring, or at the newsstand, which had several magazines. I was a little hood rat kid then and didn't have money to buy magazines. But I digress... After reading about that fight I was all pumped up and excited to see Rossman, it made him sound like he was something. Then I saw the Galindez rematch and was soooooo disappointed.
I remember that, but I wasn't impressed from the first bell. I think that the article got me thinking he'd fight like a movie boxer; land all his punches and never get hit back.
Conteh. Much better all-around fighter. Too bad he and Galindez never met - that would have been something to see!
Conteh tends to be overrated on this board, to my way of thinking, but this matchup is him all the way. Controls Rossman and the pace with his jab, with Rossman having some early success taking a couple of rounds by being aggressive and roughhousing to win a couple rounds. At some point, Conteh, even though he’s winning and has things pretty well in hand, meets Rossman on Mike’s terms and brawls. A couple of rounds of that are fought on fairly even terms before Conteh’s edges in speed and power take over. Conteh batters Rossman and eventually takes him out in 10 or 11 rounds in an enjoyable scrap.
John Conteh defeats Mike Rossman by unanimous decision. Mike is tough and durable, but Conteh's speed and counter punching spell the difference.
This is the Conteh before the two breaks of his right hand inside twelve months which inhibited him from using it thereafter. John's got way too much for Rossman in every department here. Good fight but I've got Conteh in 9.
I think Conteh would be a bit too much for Rossman...that is as long as the Brit's hands held up...but alas,...that's what we're always supposed to be reckoning on, that is both men at their relative best. Rossman isnt as bad as many here seem to think that he was,...but he's not an equal to Conteh, so I would envision a masterful exhibition of boxing from Conteh with that jab of his making a critical difference. Conteh W15 Rossman.
