How much credit do you give Antonio Margarito for his victory over Miguel Cotto?

Eh...I only had Margo winning one round in the rematch, personally. Cotto wasn't moving as much as he was the first time around, and didn't look nearly as affected by the punches, so I'm inclined to think he would have cruised to a convincing decision even if Margo had taken the final three rounds.

 

All I'm saying is Marg was coming on and Cotto started looking uncomfortable with all the extra movement IMO

Antonio Margarito LEGITIMATELY kicked Miguel Cotto's ass
forcing him to QUIT !! on his knees. He beat the HELL out of him
The rematch was a carbon copy of the first fight except Marg fought with only one good eye from round 2. Which both referee & doctor knew about. When Cotto started to wilt aqain & Tony started to come on & was beating his chest
only then did the doc intervene & stop the fight. Not to save Tony's eye but to save Cotto the embarassment of QUITTING AGAIN!!!!

 

Where are you getting your facts? Is your position that there was nothing wrong with Margarito's pads? That Richardson made it all up and the inspectors, doctor, and lawyer who confirmed the presence of the illegal insert were all just dumb or dishonest?

Here are some of the facts as relayed by the California Court of Appeals:

"At the February 10, 2009 hearing, Commission Inspectors Guevara, Dean Lohuis (Lohuis), and Mike Bray (Bray) all testified that they felt the knuckle pads Capetillo initially placed in Margarito's hand wraps before the Mosley fight and that the pads felt harder than allowed by the applicable rules and were confiscated. After feeling one of the confiscated pads at the hearing, Margarito admitted that he felt something hard. Capetillo admitted that the confiscated pads violated the applicable rules, and acknowledged that had they been used, they could have seriously injured Margarito's opponent."

Also:
"Before the contest with Mosley, Capetillo was wrapping Margarito's hands while four Commission inspectors and Mosley's trainer observed the process. After Capetillo finished wrapping Margarito's right hand, Mosley's trainer asked the inspectors to physically inspect a pre-made gauze “knuckle pad” insert that Capetillo was about to wrap over Margarito's left hand. The inspectors found that the inner layers of the pad were discolored and that the pad felt harder than it should have. In a report prepared after the inspection, Commission Inspector Che Guevara (Guevara) described the gauze pad removed from Margarito's left hand as “dirty-looking” and smeared with a white substance that looked like plaster and was hard to the touch. Concluding that the pad violated the rules, the inspectors confiscated the pad and instructed Capetillo to prepare a new one.

Mosley's trainer then asked the inspectors to examine the gauze insert in Margarito's already wrapped right hand. Margarito insisted there was nothing in the right hand wrapping, and held his hand out saying, “Touch it. Feel it. Go ahead. There is nothing in it.” The inspectors ordered the wrapping removed and found a similar improperly hardened pad, which they confiscated. After Capetillo prepared two new knuckle pads, the inspectors approved Margarito's hand wraps and allowed Margarito to proceed with the boxing match."

"The commissioners at the hearing inspected one of the pads that had been confiscated from Margarito's hand wraps and compared it to the soft gauze that is used to wrap a boxer's hand before a contest. The other confiscated pad was sent to the Department of Justice's forensic laboratory for evaluation, where it was photographed under a microscope at six times magnification. The photographs were presented as evidence at the hearing.

At the conclusion of the hearing, all seven commissioners voted unanimously to revoke Margarito's license.

4. The Commission's Decision

In a written decision issued on March 31, 2009, the Commission found that the knuckle pads removed from Margarito's hand wraps before the Mosley fight on January 24, 2009, had been adulterated with a white plaster-like substance. The Commission concluded that the use of adulterated knuckle pads by a boxer seriously endangers the boxer's opponent and gives the boxer an unfair advantage that causes discredit to boxing."

"Three Commission inspectors testified at the hearing that they felt the knuckle pads removed from Margarito's hand wraps and found them to be harder than allowed by the applicable rules. Inspector Lohuis's January 27, 2009 report describing the gauze pad confiscated from Margarito's left hand wrap states: “It appeared that some sort of liquid had been applied to this smaller pad, which was a violation of the rules.”"

And the first-round beating he put on Golden Johnson also looks suspect in hindsight. Johnson retired after that one. I wonder what happened with him and whether anyone ever interviewed him about his thoughts post-Mosley.

 

Kermit Cintron did, apparently:

Two successful defenses preceded a second meeting with Margarito in April 2008, a fight that ended with Cintron on the short end of another stoppage – this time in round six – and left him wondering for the first time whether or not the since-disgraced Mexican was competing with an unfair edge.

Incidentally, just nine months later, Margarito was caught with tampered hand wraps prior to a title defense against Shane Mosley.

“I was ready for war mentally, but it was the same as the first fight. I’ve fought bigger punchers. His punches seemed to hurt me like he had bricks in his gloves,” he said. “There’s an interview out there quoting me saying how I felt his knuckles through his gloves. It was an interview in the dressing room right after the fight.”

It was a very good win against a good opponent. I give him a lot of credit and will till evidence is given otherwise. I also give Cotto credit for rebounding from a defeat that I felt at the time was reminiscent of JCC Taylor with out the climactic ending.

 

I saw Tony's hands wrapped for Fight 1 was ringside for the fight He Legitimately kicked Cotto's ass. The commission rep was right there too watching there was nothing in those wraps.
Remember Tony was blind in one eye from round 2 but Cotto STILL couldnt stop him & legitimately beat him
Railroading Tony gave Oscar & Floyd a ready made excuse not to fight him & a built in excuse for the hammering Cotto took from him. Your thoughts are Cotto's face was so badly beaten Tony must have had loaded gloves just like the CSAC. He was beat just as bad in Fight 2 & would have QUIT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

 

How about the credit for the Sergio Martinez win?, It was Margarito who handed Martinez his first defeat...

Martinez just accepted the defeat, when asked about it.
