Rip Minter. The Hagler fight and crowd trouble still sticks in my mind, chairs and beer cans flying into the ring.
Minter and conteh should have been used as commentators a lot more than they were. Really straight talking down to earth guys. RIP Alan.
Alan had a serious drink problem. He did some summarising for the Beeb in the early 80's but was clearly the worse for wear on several occasions.
Yeah I'd heard that before actually. Very sad. Because any time I saw or heard him colour commentating on TV or radio he was excellent. As was conteh, who apparently had a similar problem...
A fine British boxer of the old school. He was world champion, not just a holder of a "world title", he was undisputed middleweight champion. He won the title in the ring and lost it in the ring, and not to some mug either, but to a true all-time great of the sport. He was a down to earth bloke as well.
Crikey he was barely retired that time. Must've affected his boxing career a lot. The way he retired so fast after Hagler suggests all was not well with Alan. Alcohol addiction is deadly.
Yeah I know. Minter was generally. Very sporting to all his opponents after the fight though, including black opponents line Doug Denning. Amazing the faux "outrage" by mainstream media scum against the likes of Alan for a throwaway comment, yet just the other night a Somalian Muslim went on a 2- hour stabbing spree in the centre of Birmingham England and not a word from mainstream media q uestioning this issue. Sickening hypocrisy!
