Canelo is a better power puncher than Mayweather and uses more upper body movement. Mayweather has the better jab and better fundamentals. I would give prime Mayweather a slight edge in overall skill and concentration but it's a very close comparison when you consider how much better of a power puncher Canelo is.

Canelo has better punching technique. Mayweather was a defensive fighter who primarily worked behind the jab. Canelo has a facet to his game that Mayweather never had : the ability to seek and destroy. So when making the comparison, yes Mayweather had a deeper defensive skillset, but you have to take into account that Mayweather was not a big puncher. Canelo is. Canelo is more well rounded as a fighter than Mayweather was. But what Mayweather was good at, i.e. defense, hitting without getting hit, Mayweather is in a class all his own. But when it comes to power punching, seek and destroy, landing big shots out of nowhere at odd angles, these are things that Mayweather was never displayed. That was one of the biggest criticisms of Mayweather, that he was too defensive at times and didn't excite the crowd like Canelo does with big flashy power punches and highlight reel knockouts.
