Nah, Moore had just declined. Plus, it took Marciano 8, not 7. I can't see Quarry going the distance with Marciano twice. Nor can I see London 11, Hard 12, Jackson 12 & 10.
Likely not, although Patterson was quicker & more explosive. But besides that is a single fight, are you not aware that a KO or TKO involved many factors besides pure power? So it is a terrible way to consider it when there are many aspects involving skill, punch volume, accuracy-even things that allow you to get to level a shot & not lose-defense, endurance, chin... Just something like how often you hit a guy, where, if it is seen coming: these things can mean a lot more than pure power. It is like say an RBI or runs scored in baseball: those who do well in these statistics likely hit for power, but it is a terrible measure of independent production because it depends heavily on: era, offensive or defensive. Ballpark. How good your teammates are to give you opportinities, etc. There are folks who know boxing so well here, but too many others still make beginner mistakes like equating KO ratio with pure power.
Rocky Marciano stopped Archie Moore on Sept 21 1955 by a TKO 9. Floyd Patterson stopped Archie Moore on Nov 30 1956 by a KO 5, to win the title vacated by the retirement of Marciano in 1956. Floyd did have better hand speed, and could put an opponent away when hurt. Patterson did also have better footwork, covered up quite well. Rocky did have very bruising blows plus his famous Suzi-Q right hand, but the one thing that plagued Rocky throughout his whole career was his propensity to cut, something that Floyd rarely did. Both were great champions however.
I cant see Lowry going the distance twice with Patterson. Cokkell going 9 rds. I think Marciano hit harder though.
Well done, sir. So it did I took both of these results into account when writing my post. I disagree, I think it's personally reasonable that those two could potentially go that far with Floyd.
Rocky took 9 rounds of endless clubbing punches to beat Moore, while underdog, Floyd despatched Arch with crisp left hooks. Patterson had a broken hand in the first Jackson fight then stopped him in ‘57. No, a past prime, Patterson, didn’t stop Quarry over 22 rounds. Rocky might have managed it, but he took 21, to catch up with LaStarza. Was he any better than Jerry, and could a prime Floyd left hook Roland out of it?, I tend to think he would, with many rounds to spare. So too with Don Co..ell, shamelessly fouled over 9 rounds in San Francisco. RM had no need to resort to what he did. Again, like in the Moore fight, he had to hit him countless times, sometimes with his fists! Not that I would like to have seen it, given Don’s insane bravery, but Floyd would have cleanly stopped him well within 9 rounds.
Moore was unshaped because false **** accusing and was in prison with no time for training then after he came from prison he overtrained. Moores body looked quite soft in the Patterson fight. It looked to me that moore showed up in the worst shape of his career. Could be because of the blackmailing scandal moore had to go through in 56. No time for training camp. Moore was coming out of a brutal beat down from the hands of Marciano, and nobody ever was the same after fighting the man, look at Vingo,Lastarza,Layne,34-1-1, Charles,Walcott and others...
Marciano hit harder than Patterson, but had worse accuracy and speed so the numbers look deceiving. It's like an expert marskman with a scope vs a guy just going in guns a blazing with an assault rifle. Patterson was also a better finisher and was more composed. He also wasn't as eager to go for the KO in the first place whereas Rocky was more of a shark smelling blood going crazy when a guy was hurt.
