Yes man, it's a shame that something like sports gets so politicized. Wangila was from the Western part of the country (the boxers and footballers )
Because boxing doesn't have as big a following, most people don't know the great generations of the past. Names like Robert Wangila, Phillip Waruinge, David Kamau, George "Foreman" Onyango, Peter "Mont" Waweru, Michael "Spinks" Mutua etc are IMO likelier to be recognized abroad by people with a keen interest in boxing history than back home. Conjestina is somewhat unfortunately the poster girl for the dangers of boxing here as she has suffered some brain trauma and also lives in very squalid conditions since the end of her career. In that way she has stayed in the public conscience where occasionally there is a public plea to raise funds for her treatment and upkeep. So yes, hers is the name the average Kenyan would appreciate when thinking of boxing whereas Wangila is known amongst people who followed boxing and sports in general in the 80s.
Sorry for my late reply! Thank you for all of your insightful, useful and helpful information! My sincere hope for you and your people is that one day, you will see your first male boxing world champion, which will be followed by a record interest in boxing in Kenya, hopefully one that calls more contenders and champions!
