You are probably right. But Jones did make several defenses at Middleweight, and, even had several fights at Junior Mideweight, so, I believe it is fair to include him in the middleweight discussion.

Just reviewed my own list. To be quite frank, my knowledge plummets pretty badly south of featherweight.

This is one of the most fascinating lists i have seen for heavyweight (i mean that in a good way, even if i don't agree with the list)

Vitali at #4 seems awfully high given the poor level of competition that he faced. Vitali would beat a lot of heavyweights h2h, especially the guys under 200 lbs, due to his size, strength and durability. But #4 seems way too high. He couldn't stop a faded Briggs, he stopped an aging Sanders after struggling in the early rounds (a slightly younger Sanders might have beaten him). His resume is one of the weakest i have seen from a fighter of his caliber. I think #4 seems way too high for me. Even top 10 is too high.

I do like you giving Schmeling and Witherspoon props.

Nah, he was dominating in the ring vs everybody. Anyone can lose on a torn shoulder or cut, and even with these injures he was still in the lead.

The Briggs fight should have been stopped, but either way he gave him a beating. His resume includes 8-9 wins over top ten Ring Magazine ranked opponents, 2 lineal champions, and a some alphabet champions. That is not weak.

    Accomplishments

    • Vitali has defeated 15 boxers for the world heavyweight title. He is the only heavyweight boxer to have reigned as world champion in three different decades. He's 15-2 in world title matches. Few if any have more title wins or a better winning percentage.

    • He was never down on any judges score card after three rounds as a pro. His round won to rounds lost ratio is better than any champion at any weight in the history of champions. Simply amazing.

    • He was never floored by a punch.

    • He came back with zero warm out fights, out of the ring for years in his middle to late 30's to dominate.

    • He overcame multiple back and shoulder injuries.

    • He has one of the highest KO % in the history of lineal / Ring Magazine champions. He stopped guys like Purrity, Donald and Bean, who were very hard men to stop. He only fought two opponent below .500, Each one ended in round 1. His Ko% is earned and those family with it know age diminished the KO%.

    • He exited a champion in this 40's.

As a bonus ,he was also a pro kickboxing champion.

Fair enough. We will agree to disagree.

Vitali may have beaten a lot of ranked guys but i just don' t think most of them were that good. I find his resume to be very weak. I feel similarly to Monte Cox who ranked Vitali in his top 15 but also said he found Vitali's competition to be underwhelming.

Still, a guy that big, strong and durable will dominate a lot of fighters. I can't see anyone under 200 lbs beating Vitali. Sure, size isn't everything but it does matter to some degree. Vitali's physical advantages will be too much for a lot of heavyweights.

Is it just me who is thinking...
After watching the video on YouTube, I just want to know who left Charles and Moore out of their LHW lists? But cannot be arsed to go back to find the culprit(s)? Let someone else do it

To be fair I thought it would be the guy who had Tyson & Bowe as heavyweight 1 & 2 but I stand corrected

Here's the thing. Holyfield struggled vs. ranked guys and lost to some on points. Lewis was knocked out by ranked guys via punches. Insert anyone you wish, even Louis or Ali, and they had trouble vs. non-rated and ranked guys that Vitali would destroy. Vitali never had such troubles...vs anyone! That's who we has.

I know Monte. He's a good historian who watches film. He's also slow to come around on modern fighters outside of Pacquaio period. However, he does eventually come around. With some historians, you have to keep Dempsey, Johnson, Louis, and Marciano where they are, and that pushes modern fighters way back. I don't subscribe to being handcuffed like that, but with some of these historians, you hurt their feelings if their guy doesn't make the top ten so they keep them where they were 20-40 years ago...even though better fighters have come along.

Yes, Vitali was big, but he has many layers around that. Being 6'7" 250 pounds with an 80" reach is problematic for anyone smaller. However, you also had a fighter who's an incredible judge of distance, pretty mobile, who can counter, and move his head. He doesn't get as much credit for that as he should. On top of that he's an all time puncher, with a iron chin. Also very active and pretty accurate. Such a man is tough to beat.

Could I suggest putting it back to the original title, but with Survey closed added to it?
