I've been reading old interviews and stories about the Toney vs Tiberi fight. Jackie Kallen said that James was having trouble making the weight. Toney got in the ring and most people's thoughts who saw the bout were that Toney lost to Tiberi. The two judges who voted for James were unlicensed to judge in the state, I've read. Tiberi never boxed again. This is how poor judging and poor administration can affect results and careers. James apparently said years later that he lost to Tiberi as well. Toney, his management and promoters were responsible for the schedule he was taking on. In his middleweight years, Toney drew with Sanderline Williams, drew with McCallum and probably deserved to lose to Tiberi. That's three fights there. Prime GGG vs prime Toney would be a good bout, a closely contested bout and it could have gone either way in my opinion. As they'll never ever box, it's all just opinions and conjecture now anyway.
McCallum's Ring Rated Wins, to the best of my knowledge... Ayub Kalule (LMW) David Braxton (LMW) Julian Jackson (LMW) Donald Curry (LMW) Herol Graham (MW) Steve Collins (MW) Michael Watson (MW) Sumbu Kalambay (MW) Randall Yonker (LHW) Jeff Harding (LHW)
But why do you even bring up the Tiberi fight when this thread is about matching the best version of Toney and GGG?
The title of the thread is " GGG vs James Toney at 160". The Tiberi bout occurred in the young Toney's middleweight reign, that's why. Toney's middleweight bouts are relevant when discussing a hypothetical Toney vs GGG bout at 160 at least to me. Or is it just fantasy forum land in your head? I've told you now about some of Toney's close bouts a few times now. Don't make me keep repeating myself. To me, GGG vs Toney would likely be a close bout in their primes and it could probably go either way. Learn to accept different opinions.
Yeah but these fantasy matchups only make sense when matching the best versions of each fighter. You want to fight out who the best man is, do not you? So the Tiber fighti is irrelevant and even you seem to acknowledge that. There is no doubt in my mind that GGG beats the Toney version of the Tiberi fight in convincing fashion! It is a matchup which makes no sense beacuse James would not have up against GGG in that kind of shape. No way, GGG way too dangerous for that. See my point now?
Gennady Golovkin honored to equal Bernard Hopkins with 20th straight 160-pound defense https://africa.espn.com/boxing/stor...kins-20th-consecutive-160-pound-title-defense
But then let's not compare the best version of GGG against the worst version of Toney (Tiberi fight). You are applying double standards!!
It's worse than that. My post was, in this case, comparing the quality of the fights; not one individual fighter against another. That said, the misinterpretation does again highlight the problem with assessing Golovkin, i.e. What did he do in his prime that's worth comparing against?
