This is very interesting because I always believed this was the only time Fleischer saw Jeffries fight. If he wasn't there ,it calls into question how much gravitas should we give to his ranking of Jeffries regarding his all time standing? Personally, I have always doubted he was present at that fight.
My copy is arriving next week. I am busily cleaning up all readings and clearing the deck for this one.
Incredible research and information on young mr jack dempsey !!! Mr Pollack performed a miracle Those who boxed Dempsey and boxing writers ,and there were many opinions i of both n this book, nearly all thought dempsey was like a stick of dynamite
Just got the book yesterday. A very quick look indicates that Mr Pollack has brought in a lot of the racial attitudes and acts of Dempsey's time, including race riots, photo of a burned up hanged black man, etc. Lots of info on other guys that he fought, some of them very obscure. I've authored or co-authored around two dozen published papers of a scientific nature and I truly appreciate the amount of data digging he (and Compton) do on their books. Doesn't mean you can't dispute one of their opinions, but you'd better be prepared to defend your position if you do! I also learned that Dempsey did in fact fight African American boxers besides the guy who (supposedly but probably didn't) break his ribs.
" I might have been have been killed by the punches of that young and strong bull" Willard on dempsey 1919
If Amazon messes with the price of the book, my recommendation is to purchase it from barnesandnoble.com. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/in...i-adam-j-pollack/1137672478?ean=9781949783032 It should be $39.95 hardcover, $29.95 paperback in the U.S. Comparable prices in the U.K. If not, shop around.
I received my copy yesterday and have had a few looks through it and it looks fantastic. It may be a few weeks until I can start a new lengthy book because I like to really focus and enjoy them but I’m really looking forward to reading it. The last Dempsey book was the autobiography he put out in the 70s, admittedly have not read any other books dedicated solely to Dempsey, so I’m gonna enjoy this one.
Pre ordered from amazon on 17th Sep,Now out of stock with no info on if they'll get anymore,Waterstones giving a 3 week estimate
Why can't he tell the stories? Nat had access to first hand testimonials, wire reports, and film. The testimonials and film, are all but gone today. Even if he wasn't there, that doesn't mean his report is wrong.
Amazon will eventually get it to you if you have ordered it. A pre-order price is locked in so I would try to stick with that. Even if they say out of stock, if you order it they will restock it. It is a big book, and I think they don’t like to keep big books on hand. See also https://www.hive.co.uk/Search/Keyword?keyword=Adam J Pollack&productType=0
Nat Fleischer and dempsey himself wish they had this documentary of dempseys carreer as mr pollack found alot info ration on dempsey not seen since printed over hundred years ago... Dempsey became a fistic phenomenon once he became seasoned... Probably the most dangerous man on his feet who ever lived.... As jack dillon said after sparring with him echoing what many other opponents said about dempsey was Dempsey was a fistic freak..
Glad you all are enjoying the book. Please keep me posted re what you think. You all are making my day.
