What was the best or your favorite submission you've seen in MMA? Or which ones stand out to you if you had to make a list?

Lots of the classics have been covered here.

But I really like this one as far as recent subs for the story behind it. Craig was getting totally dominated from the opening bell and literally forces the tap with a second remaining on the clock. Incredible comeback. Safe to say he's the most clutch submission guy in MMA right now.

Any fight involving BJ Penn after Edgar I is a washed up Penn. Well. Apart from round 1 against Nick Diaz and parts of the Fitch fight. Saw glimpses of the man at his best in those.

Ryan Hall has never gotten the credit he deserves for evolving the game. Hall and Tony Ferguson are the only fighters I've seen successfully use the Imanari roll during an mma fight, at least that I can recall. Ferguson used it against Barboza and managed to do some good ground and pound from the bottom. But what Hall has done in revolutionizing MMA with his use of the Imanari roll and the 50/50 position to get heel hooks and leg locks, it's something unlike anything we've ever seen before.

It looks really smooth, and almost easy, when we see someone pull it off successfully. But then when we see something like Rory Macdonald fail miserably trying it against Stephen Thompson as his last resort, we see how difficult it really is to use in a real fight.

Unfortunately, Ryan Hall is too old to even have a chance of establishing himself as a great fighter or even a really good fighter, most likely. But he has left something other grapplers will hopefully be able to expand upon it taking mma to the next level.

I don't want to sound rude because this is a good and insightful post - but there's a reason why those moves aren't attempted often in MMA. Stuff like that is risky to attempt that the high level and usually anticapted.

You're right. It's a move that requires an insane level of grappling skill to pull off, and it's not something that you can depend on as a staple of your game. You pretty much have to be a world class specialist in sport BJJ with a long list of accolades and tournament wins to even think about doing stuff like this; though, I think there can be exceptions to that.

And it does carry a high degree of risk, especially if you're fighting a high level opponent who can anticipate what you're doing. You have to be confident enough in your sweeps and bottom game to be willing to risk possibly giving your opponent top position. Still, it has its benefits, too. Opponents are so worried about Imanari rolls or delariva guard that it allows Ryan to open up his kicking offense with little worry about ending up on his back.

It's a unique style that we've never seen before. With guys like Garry Tonin and Dillon Danis in mma, we might be seeing more of this kind of stuff. Maybe i'm wrong, though.

The calf slicer? That was a sick submission.

Back when I used to train before I got sick, I was rolling with someone when he had my back with no hooks in. I did a gramby roll and somehow his body shot forward with momentum so I ended up behind him with one of my calves behind the back of his knee. So I triangled my legs, pulled his hips back and basically did the same thing.

It is a very brutal submission if they don't tap from it. Think of a walnut cracker trying to crack a metal ball instead of a breakable nut. Something has to give with all that pressure and the hinge of the walnut cracker will break causing it to split into two pieces. That's essentially what's going on in that submission; the entire knee joint just being ripped into two pieces.

Just bumping an old thread and adding some more to it. Have to add Demetrious Johnson's suplex armbar on Ray Borg.
