Witch fighter gets the most overrated on this forum?

Lucky for you your list didn't include Tye Fields, otherwise we'd have a war on our hands in here.

 

3 clearly flawed fighters being benn, mugabi and jackson bud. These guys are top class fighters regarded by fans around the world. Fair point with mugabi about his best days being behind him. But gerald went out and took him out in one round even if mugabi was 40 it would have still been impressive. At 34 even more so. Same with jackson....dispatched in a round the second fight....think gerald would have been about 26 at the time. Anyone that does that to guys like that at that age should be on peoples radar.

Still unsure what went wrong in the two defeats gerald suffered....think their might be a story behind them....as in he wasnt training properly maybe fell ouf with steward or something like that at the time. But gerald knocked every single fighter he beat out. A lot of them went brutally in the first round. There will always be question marks...mainly because he was cut short at 28 years old. Just starting to come into his prime. But for me anyway...he could have and should have been a top top fighter. And ond of ghe best power puncher around.

Still think he was on borrowed time going into that benn fight. Although he kept fighting against benn he seemed to come apart quite quickly. There we,re signs quite early in the fight something wasnt quite right. We,ll never know tho.

But a guy with an amatuer record like mclellans with a win against roy jones and 29 knockouts out of 29 wins....a 5th round knockout and a first round knockout against jackson and 1st round ko against an older mugabi...certainly points to him being a very good power puncher. Even just looking at his knockouts....he was a brutal puncher even if the competition wasnt that great in some of the fights.

Also had benn almost out in the first round...a lot of people argue it should have been. We,re then lookung at a guy taking out mugabi, jackson and benn in a round. Small margins tho...ended up not to be.

Agree tho...different opinions...all entitled to them bud.

I think Fury will make it into top 15 ATG territory with another win over Wilder. A win over Joshua puts him even higher imo.

First, it seems to me that more than half the fighters listed on this thread aren’t even rated all that highly in this forum or, in some cases, discussed much at all ... so how can they be overrated?

And Tyson Fury isn’t overrated on the classic forum because he’s an active fighter and he’s not much part of the discussion — shouldn’t be at all. Maybe on the World forum he is or isn’t or on the Brit forum, but not here.

If you’ve been around, you see a lot of fighters go through phases of underrated and overrated and generally settle over time — with the exceptions of a few hot-button guys like Dempsey and Marciano and RJJ, who are infinitely debated.

Lately I think Floyd Patterson has been overrated — several threads over these months having him much higher than I think he is generally considered, especially H2H.

John Conteh and Jake LaMotta have, at times, been almost unbeatable H2H in discussions to the point of ridiculousness. Hell, look at their records and you can see they could lose to a lot of ATGs because they lost to less-than-ATGs when they were still prime and active.

I think Bob Foster falls on the underrated side lately. Probably JCC too.

So Ali who started fighting and beating contenders as a 20 year old in 1962 and fought and beat everyone there was to fight until 1980 ducking no one, is overrated?
Likewise Joe Louis defended his title 25 times against all comers and totally dominated his division, so he’s overrated also?

 

Larry Holmes...totally overrated here. 20 defenses against bums, seven and a half years of holding a title he won in a disputed contest. Knocked down by losers. Every heavyweight champ since would have beaten him in their prime.

 

Nobody denies their achievements. I meant they are overrated H2H.

 

I don’t think they are.
I think plenty people favour other fighters over them, it’s certainly not unanimous.

 

I agree on Foster being underrated.
