Jack Dempsey went by many Nick names like the manassa mauler or giant slayer which fit and were pretty tame honestly.

But one that stood out was the "kid blackie" Nick name which is very strange given that he was completely Caucasian (not that it would be any less offensive if he was black). Not sure the story behind that one, but it's hilarious to imagine the reactions if a fighter were to be called that nowadays.

Well they definitely aren't pc friendly or appropriate Nick names, but the intention behind them isn't malicious. There was a Japanese MMA fighter named Sakuraba who became known as the "Gracie killer" because he was one of the few fighters who could stand up to the Gracie family when they were causing a rampage beating everyone with Brazilian jiu jutsu. Sakuraba beat some of them and earned the Nick name.

Wilder is often called The Bronze Bomber.

Italian Stallion is both a case of cultural misappropriation and cruelty to animals.

In reference to his bronze medal, not tone of skin. It's also an ode to Joe Louis himself, but with his own spin on it as both are from the same state.

Nigel Bemn's Dark Destroyer moniker was very close to the knuckle even when he was fighting.

Joe Louis had some pretty offensive ones, before the Brown Bomber stuck.

Two tonne tony galento was an early example of fat shaming and cultural misapropriation as they stole from industrial culture without acknowledging it.

This too would be cancelled in the present climate.joe louis a light skinned black daring to call himseld brown...he'd be deemed not brown or black enough and cancelled by antifa and BLM...worse he'd probly be called an uncle tom

An organization like BLM or ANTIFA, would not have dared to show its head in Louis's era.

That is why Louis took the approach that he did.

    It worked to be fair!

    Really? That’s way less cool.

I gotta ask, how is it offensive when the fighter is the one gracing himself with the moniker? A black man drawing attention to his blackness is not frowned upon.

I could understand if Larry Merchant came up with the nickname. Especially considering he’d stick to his guns when questioned and refuse to apologize about it before taking his customary mid conversation nap. Never change, Larry.

Really it all comes down to the origin of the nickname in today’s social climate.

Yeah, although I think with zero context that the Bronze Bomber is a much cooler name than the Brown Bomber.

Is that in reference to Wilder or Louis? As I don't find Wilder's offensive at all. And I don't really find Louis' offensive either, but if someone ended up getting given that name today, and if we assume it's due to the same reasons Louis was, then I can certainly see it offending people.

Not talking about you personally finding it offensive. I thought I read something about his nickname causing a racial stir. But then these last few posts of mine have been typed while drifting in and out of sleep.

Recent Champion Peter Quillin of Michigan uses the Kid Chocolate nickname, in honor of the late great Cuban champ. Quillin is of Cuban heritage.

Is that the middleweight who got smashed up? I've only ever heard of him.

I think names are only offensive based on the context. Quillin's names isn't linked to race in anyway, but of course, Montalvo's was.
