Remember when the WBA had Fres William Oquendo rated for a ridiculously long time, for some reason?

This is the nuttiest situation. I remember how bad Oquendo was in his prime, how ugly his fights with Byrd and Ruiz were, all grabbing, clinching, headlocks, mauling. Just awful.

This is probably Oquendo's crowning achievement from his prime, in hindsight:

^ and even that is ugly AF. :shakehead:

(kayoing Sugar Mo Harris a couple of years later in an IBF eliminator might actually have been a little more important, despite Harris carrying in a dozen losses already - while his eighth round TKO against Clifford Etienne nine months before he fought Izon may have seemed more creditable in the moment due to Etienne's undefeated record - but the Black Rhino would completely unravel thereafter...)

They dropped him last week, finally.

However, you remember when Trevor Cosmo Bryan Jr. defeated BJ Flores to become the WBA interim heavyweight champion? Two years and two months ago?

...well, he's still the WBA interim heavyweight champion and #1 in the rankings. Guess when he last fought? Yep, against BJ Flores, two years and two months ago. :shakehead:

So can he stay ranked by wba when he's in his 80s? They must draw a line somewhere.

I do think boxers are supposed to pay the sanctioning bodies in order to get ranked. I also haven’t busted their sites in a long time but I remember many of them looked like they were made in the 90s and were not always kept up with. I am imagining either Oquendo’s team still paying or WBA not updating. Those two scenarios are only slightly better, but bad/ugly no matter how you cut it.

Oquendo had some sort of court order to stay ranked as a contender as he had some legal right to fight for the title. I imagine him being dropped will further legal proceedings.

Tbh its a farce but the WBA are the biggest frce in boxing and I hope Oquedo beats them and does some major damage to them alongside Covid.

Id love for them to go out of business some how, be a great boost to the sport.

Funny you mention this. I can vividly remember watching Byrd vs Oquendo on HBO a fight which Oquendo should have won somewhere around 9-3 on any sane scorecard and even Byrd knew he was behind and was doing his best Joe Frazier impersonation the last 2 rounds trying to KO Oquendo because he needed it and then the Decision was announced where even Byrd had a completely stunned and surprised look on his face when he won.

Then, I am reminded how from around that same time frame Don King had control of every single Heavyweight belt (Brewster WBO, Byrd IBF, Ruiz WBA, and Rahman WBC) and didn't make one single unification fight. It was pathetic.
