Louis WAS a great puncher, but not the old man who faced Rocky though. Moore had good power and he did drop Marciano . Layne? Not all that. Dempsey would be the biggest puncher he faced by far and the most fierce . This fight would erupt into a firefight early, and Jack gets there first with the most.

It matters what Dempsey proved in his career not in the imagination of his fanboy followers. It's no fault of his that he had to win the crown from a full time rodeo star but his list of successful title defenses was egregious. He was a product whose shelf life was being protected by inactivity and built up challengers. Again, this doesn't prove as much to me as Rocky ducking no one and staying busy by fighting guys who actually look decent on film.

It's a possibility. Dempsey can unquestionably hit and he's fast.

On the other hand Seamus makes a good case for why a proven guy like Rocky can be favoured. I like the consistency and grit of Marciano in this one myself.

Moore was a great light heavy hitter.Layne was a decent puncher but no more, who did Layne beat stop who was worth talking about China Chin Satterfield? Louis was finished as a puncher.

It's quite reasonable to pick Rocky but I pick Dempsey, and I do so because he was quicker of foot and hand ,and more elusive ,plus he wasn't prone to cuts.

Sharkey has said that his and tunneys ability to back track helped them in their bouts with dempsey; that walcott might give dempsey a better fight than marciano would.

By Ted Lowry's opinion Moore was harder puncher than Rocky.Joe Louis was only 37 years old significantly
younger than the old Foreman who could destroy Moorer.

I've never seen that quote from Lowry.I know Moore said Sheppard and Durelle hit him harder than Marciano.Louis was washed up when he fought Marciano, he was a one handed fighter relying on his jab.
He was never the same fighter after the War.I stand by my statement that Marciano fought very few big punchers ,the best two one 38 the other 38/40 both had him on the floor.

That was a shot Dempsey and he still ko'd Sharkey and had Tunney on the floor.

I actually favour Dempsey he could get wild at times but this would be a firefight and I'd favor the quicker fighter with a better arsenal of punches.

You mean that Sharkey would have won (seemingly) had Sharkey not turned & complained about a low blow not being called?

Yes he could. I'd favour Marciano - but wouldn't be surprised if Dempsey beat him.

No chance. Dempsey was to small, and even tho Marciano's punching power is waaay overrated, he'd wear Dempsey down with his stance (actually had his hands up) fitness (actually trained by a professional trainer) and punching power (overrated but it existed).

Its either Dempsey by early Knockout or Marciano by late stoppage.

I lean towards Dempsey by early Knockout.
