I've decided to finally learn about some of the lower weight guys. What are your thoughts on Sid Smith? How high would you rank him at flyweight?
Just bad luck man. Nay luck. Sharing an era with Wilde. Two gorgeous wins over Criqui and Symonds, over the space of about a month I think without looking which makes him a hell of a lot more than a footnote to Wilde, which is what he normally appears as.
One of the many excellent Jewish boxers from London of the early 20th century. He beat a lot of really good fighters, great longevity etc; but yeah, Wilde was just too much for him as he was for damn near everyone.
Off topic, but guy a want to have a proper look into is Solly Smith. He had a really good run including beating Dixon.
Wasn't there something weird about that fight? Ropes cut or something? I can't remember, may have made it up.
I checked The Examiner, The Call, and The Chronicle, I couldn't find anything about the ropes being broke, though I may have missed something. O'Rourke claimed the decision was unfair. The Examiner and The Call said it was fair, with it being even until the 15th, and Smith pulling ahead late, while The Chronicle said a draw would have been fairer. Dixon was seen to be past his best though.
Lots but I just cannae be bothered. Really good though. Glad he made McGrain’s top 50 flyweights of all time.
