What about Deontay Wilder? He's definitely an overrated puncher.

He's serious. When you loo really really closely Gomez would be a second tier punching great rather than a first tier. This is no disrespect and he can absolutely bang. He's just a teeny bit short of that insane level is all.

    Disagree.

The guy had 15 surgeries on his right hand going into the Dokes fight. Incredible he could get a good chin like that out of there with a hand in that condition. It looked like a bag of marbles and he beat Dokes in his backyard.

Dokes had not been off his feet since the amatuer bout against a prime Stevenson when he was 16 years old.

Not at all. I explained it in further detail here in the thread somewhere.

Well I suppose it goes without saying I disagree, but one need only think of the condition Dokes was in going into the Coetzee fight to get some sense of perspective on that. Not real sure what his never being knocked off his feet before has to do with anything, given that.

Ok John, but for your intervetion I would have put a case for Gomez to be listed as KO puncher, you dont get much wrong, so I will sheath my counter argument.

Gomez was a great all around puncher. A KO master. That was due to a combination of factors that went well beyond raw power. There’s only a single one punch KO to his name off the top of my head. He wasn’t a guy that would change the tide of a fight with a single shot.

Since you ask, I lost at Tennis ( a omen ? ) lets get into it, so the title was " Overated Punchers " and IYO Gomez falls into this category, fair enough we all have diff oponions on all range of topics invovling boxers, what I am struggling with is, how can a boxer with 42 Kos out of 44 wins be consisderd overrated as a puncher.
Now I know stats do not paint the whole picture, and yes they omit a yawn on occasions, but a overall percentage of 87.5% surely suggests serious punching power no ? if we also draw comparsions with the elite of power punchers, that % is truly outstanding so, Shavers 83% Klitschko 87% Moore 60%, I concedee it is realative to the number of fights, but still mighty impressive, I could have trotted out lots more of the " big punches " Robinson, Saddler, Wilder ( bit tainted of late ) and Wilfredos will compare more than favourably with them all.
Title defenses 17 all by KO ( or maybe TKO, or RSF whatever ) achiements that the likes of, Louis, Dempesy, have not got in their CV, despite their undoubted greatness, and despite Bujia ( knows his stuff ) stating that Gomez wasnt the type of fighter that could change a fight with one punch, I beg to differ, I have revisted all his defenses on You Tube prior to sitting down to this post, and had forgotten what a devastating puncher he was, Bujia might want to do same, and he will see amongst a load of others, Gomez hitting someone once Koybaashi for instance ( who after tasting Gomezs left hook, fell face first, as if shot ) and indeed altering the course of that fight, when he struck, his opponents fell hard, some fell ( or were knocked, through the ropes ) ala Firpo, some were left draped over the bottom rope ala Erskine, his body shots were were on a par with Wards/ Chavez ( go see ) also he KOd the likes of Davila, Meza, and in particular Pintor and Zarate ,1 ATG, and the other a very good champion, both I would say had above average chins.
    Thats my case.
Down the line if some young buck asks me about Gomez, I will say he was great puncher, who amongst you guys wouldnt .

Off to bed know, trying to figure out why I lost:( keep well John, Sal, and Bujia.

Ribalta fought Smith and he knows Smith's power. Why ? For example Shavers lost to Holmes but Larry respects Earnies's power.

Maybe Martin was stopped but he could go the distance with old Foreman and Wladimir Klitschko and these are
    remarkable things.

Ko percentage ? Are you serious ?An intelligent boxing fan doesn't care this unimportant information.

Michael Dokes and Leon Spinks would beg to differ.

He had a very good right hand.

Btw even at 15 I knew they called it bionic because of the surgeries. A little kid might take the name literally.

Just because it had a cool moniker doesnt mean it was overrated.
