Question: should Carlos have came out of retirement around 1982? Though he'd lost a split decision to Wilfred Benitez and a UD to Duran that's hardly hitting bottom. He could have fought Milt McCrory around that time for a title. He would have been 34 or 35 when Donald Curry was champ. Could he have beaten either one?

Carlos Palomino was one of those rear cases of boxers with education... I'm not calling boxers stupid but when all you could do is fight, you will stay in boxing and comeback even when everybody see that your best days are gone.. Carlos Palomino was a clean, smart boxer and he had no desire to make a comeback.

Reinhardt, as McCrory and Curry won their respective titles in '83, Palomino would be about 34 (maybe 33 for Curry if it was their first title defenses). Let's assume he had had a few tuneups before this and I think his chances against McCrory would have been good. It would have been a 12 rounder and I see Milt getting off to a fast start. Carlos was a slow starter in general and McCrory was good with movement and keeping the fighter on the outside of his long reach. But I do see Carlos gaining ground in the middle rounds. Carlos wasn't the best at those who wouldn't engage like Azevedo, but McCrory wouldn't run for 12 rounds - not when he was tagging Carlos fairly easily early in the fight. And once McCrory starts to flag a bit after sampling enough body shots from Carlos in the middle rounds, they begin to exchange. I see Carlos stopping him in the 10th or 11th with Milt still ahead on points.

As for Curry. That's a different proposition altogether. Curry was made of far sterner stuff than McCrory. This would be a WBA 15 rounder and although I don't see anyone getting stopped, I do see Curry taking a good 15 round decision.

I have to agree, Carlos Palomino, whom I really admired was a classy champion, single father, well educated and a good role model. But in 1982, i could see him stopping the tall lanky Milton McCrory in 10 rounds. But a Donald Curry would have outslicked him, enroute to victory on points.
