I used to love the prizefighter events. With no live audiences at the moment, I think it would be a great time to start it again. It would draw in good tv audiences. It is a cheap show to make which would give us entertainment, fighters a platform to show their skills and promoters/ tv companies a profitable event.
Prizefighter was a great series. I think that it will be back at some point, because it was so exciting to watch. It was really good at matching a certain level of fighter against each other, and some of the winners went onto have good careers afterwards. I think any tournament style format for boxing is good, because boxing has a real issue with match making. There is a lack of matches made which are 50/50s and bringing genuine excitement. So many fights on major shows are missmatches sold to us as competitive fights, or warm up fights where the away figher lays down.
I loved Prizefighter, and there were some really good one back in the day. I usually found them well matched and it was often the favourite didn't win or even do well. There was a Light Heavyweight one that sticks in my mind, that Tony Oakey won. Courtney Fry was the favourite going in, and there were some other decent domestic names such as Carl Dilks, Steve Spartacus and Bob Ajisafe who has gone on to have a good career.
Loved the format. 3 Rounds of all out attack from the very 1st second. What isn't there to like about this? Bring it back. At the very worst, it helps gain exposure for those boxers, who might never ever get the chance to fight on TV, to a larger audience thus gaining new support.
Think they started overdoing it abit but they should definitely bring it back... Martin Murray vs cello renda was my personal highlight... Great scrap
I remember when they posted on this site and gave us a link to get a free prizefighter t-shirt. Mine turned up but it was an xxl which looked ridiculous on me. I still wore it down the pub once. I think I ended using as a rag to wash the car with in the end. the rogan and A Harrison ones I watched but not many of the others
I always loved it too. Was gutted when it ended. But I remember at the time on forums like this, hardcore fans were moaning 1 That it was ****, 2 That there was too many of them it was too often. 3 That it wasn't the traditional boxing format. All that hate for it.. made Eddie and sky pull the plug on it. (So they do listen to the fans) It was a great night of entertainment. It was great for betting on. Would love to see it return.
It ruined boxing in the 60s and 70s and when SKY brought it back, you could see why! You want to watch three round tournaments, go to your local amateur boxing shows. Pro boxing is not about three round fights in one night tournaments.
I think its a good format for prospects to prove themselves and the 3 round format opens the door for veterans. A fair few winners have gone on to be world champions or had successful careers.
The whole point is, you can't go and watch local fights now so bringing prizefighter back would fill the gap. It doesn't ruin boxing, it gives fighters a platform to showcase their skills, fighters that might never get televised fights without this.
I admire the positivity, maybe that is the way forward for the sport. Old fossils like me will need replacing. Or help set up a local tournament/show for your local amateurs and fill that gap in the market! I just about accept twelve rounders now, I am not going to accept three round pro fights.; they are merely exhibitions and should not pollute a pro resume.
