Well there's a spot open at #50. Mainly because I copied and pasted most of the guys when I was rejigging the order, and left somebody out, but there's a spot. The reason he didn't get the placement for the first draft, was because I decided too much of his better work was more 140 than 135. Yeah, I'm not surprised. So long as Ismael Laguna was one of the others.
Great list, nice to see Joe Brown making the top 15. As you said the top four are almost interchangeable, my argument for Gan's taking the top spot is he had all the skills of a modern dayer, was a hard puncher, excellent chin, all the punches and in combination, great footwork and stamina and if he already had TB in his last wins it adds to his legend. The only question is did that first right hand by McGovern land and hurt him, Fleisher said no and I'll go with that.
I think the McGovern fight was probably fixed. The first Jimmy Britt fight was nearly as bad though, and the case for it being fixed isn't nearly as good.
This statement here, I would like to place as a shining example as why any all-time great lists I have created, I always make them on a head-to-head basis, finessed by way of using one's head. Otherwise one ends up just adding meaningless numbers together and ending up with Artur Grigorian over Roberto Duran.
Joe Brown is probably among the top 15 fighters with the most ordinary names. That’s about the only top 15 list he should make.
Right, because as automatons we have no judgement or opinions only numerals and algorithms to determine an end. Well, I'm old school, and I can break down a fighter's attributes and deficiencies. And I can ascertain who would win between fighter A and fighter B. And whether I'm wrong or right it is still my opinion. And you know what else is my opinion? That you're a nitwit! And I didn't even need an equation to tell me that.
I think Ritchie is low if anything. Wins over Ad Wolgast, Freddie Welsh, and a short win over Benny Leonard.
Sure thing, man. Both men were pretty integral parts of what is IMO the deepest LW era of all time. Mitchell and Ritchie both have incredibly stacked résumés. They fit with the criteria brilliantly. They also weren't just Bartfield-esque journeymen who picked up plenty of good wins, they were fairly consistent and legitimate contenders. @BitPlayerVesti tends to think I have Ritchie and Welsh too far apart. Anyway, here's their most important wins. Well, in my opinion for Willie and Bujia's for Mitchell. Richie Mitchell, 54-13-12: Freddie Welsh Johnny Kilbane X2 Ad Wolgast Patsy Cline Mexican Joe Rivers Mel Coogan Patsy Brannigan Ever Hammer Willie Ritchie, 45-14-17: Benny Leonard Freddie Welsh Jack Britton As Wolgast Frank Barrieau Harlem Tommy Murphy Yankee Schwartz
