The WBC announced they are forming a new super cruiserweight division from 190 - 224lbs. It's a silly move in my opinion. The cruiserweight division has always been seen as the less glamorous smaller brother of the heavyweight division. At best it's a stepping stone for smaller fighters to make the move to heavyweight. This new division will be seen as the same. The best talents in it will eventually want to move up to heavyweight. The level of interest in it will still be significantly less than heavyweight. It will just replace the existing cruiserweight division in terms of importance/interest and money making. It's funny that Tony Bellew is championing its creation, the same guy who didn't want to fight 215lb Wilder because he was too tall.
Anyone competing in this division is not a professional boxer in my opinion . It's an insult to the history of the sport, an absolute joke and an embarrassment to anyone involved
If no other organizations follow suit then who are the WBC super duper cruiserweights going to fight for the Purple infinity stars and hearts belt the WBC is probably making right now?
They are all going to follow suit if the WBC carries it through. More weight classes equal more sanctioning fees. I don't want it, but I am trying to be philosophical. Maybe Povetkin can pick up a belt before he retires, or a favorite like Hunter who would not ordinarily have much of a chance might make something of it. Guys who are crowded out like Sirenko may be given opportunities, and even if Wilder is given the thing, every "title defense" only pushes up Fury. Still, yeah, it is garbage.
The only good thing to come of this is that HW is still the biggest division. Problem now is old timers will be further denigrated by saying they aren't even SCW fighters let along HW.
I have for time thought the gap between Light Heavy and Cruiser is perhaps to big but I'm not a fan of how they want to switch the weights to 190 to 224. Bridge LHW from 175 to 185 Cruiser 185 to 200 200+ HW
Only thing we can hope is that the WBC stands alone with the creation of this division, and the other 3 big ones just carry on with Cruiser and Heavyweight like nothing happened, so we can ignore this whole crap as some stupid WBC only thing. But, knowing how greedy these alphabets are, it will only be a matter of time before we'll see the others follow suit and make it "official".
I wish fighters would just stop competing for wba or wbc belts until they knock this **** off. None of the sanctioning bodies are great but the belts and weight classes and super duper champ **** is idiotic
That's the thing. They collect sanctioning fees from every division so if there were 50 divisions, its all profit. Meanwhile the divisions become weaker and weaker and more and more irrelevant. Super middle weight is already one of those orphan divisions where any good boxer that applies himself can snag a belt.
Prepare yourself for the potential of a WBC regular, interim, diamond, emeritus, franchise Super CW Champion, and a WBA Regular, interim and Super, Super CW Champion, I can't even take any of this seriously.
