Have you guys seen the Loughran-Sharkey fight? Sharkey came in straight lines so many times throwing wild punches, leaving the right side of his face/head exposed. Wide open for a check hook!!! Yet Loughran, never one to use his left hand offensively, never used it! And he got knocked out as a result!!! I saw that openness of Sharkey's clearly!

If I had trained Tommy, he'd have won!!!!

To be honest I don't think that Loughran is the kind of fighter who would have summited himself to the whims and wishes of his trainer.

Also even if he had landed a hook on Sharkey, he probably didn't have enough power for it to be disastrous to him.

I don't know much about the first point, but someone else on this forum said that Sharkey did not have the best chin. Loughran was able to hurt Carnera repeatedly with straight rights despite being outweighed by 84 pounds.

Unfortunately any advice would’ve been ignored. Loughran was on an almost 40 fight winning streak going into the Sharkey fight and the media was treating him like he was the second coming of Gene Tunney and Loughran believed it despite not achieving Tunney’s accomplishments yet, so he underestimated Sharkey and got badly destroyed.

Despite how talented Loughran was the media and even his own manager described him as a very pretentious person. Going into his fight against Steve Hamas Loughran scoffed at Hamas being a threat to him, since Hamas was more well known for his success as a former football player than for anything he did as a boxer, but that didn’t stop Hamas from stopping Loughran on fightnight.

He was knocked out once in an early career brawl.
There's the low blow KO by Dempsey (a fight which doesn't support him having a bad chin)
There's the KO against Carnera which there's a lot of question mark around
And he was knocked out by Joe Louis when he was past his best

I don't think there's much basis to conclude he had a bad chin, if he had a bad chin he couldn't have gone toe to toe with Jack Dempsey.

I think you're also underestimating what a slippery ******* Sharkey could be

Loughran woulda still beaten him easily with a jab and a check hook. I seen it!

When I watch the footage, Sharkey is not walking straight ahead, he's jabbing his way inside and even using some bob and weave. Loughran was getting beat to the punch by the sharper quicker fighter on this night, a left hook attempt would have likely got him dropped by a right.

I suppose this is just a joke, like when forums went crazy with fairweather fans after Mayweather vs Hatton, hyping the check hook as if it was the ultimate punch nobody thought of before.

Really, in the version I've seen, Sharkery was constantly moving his head, fainting, moving in and out. He was constantly parrying and slipping Loughran's jab.

Plus he had Loughran's lead pinned when he scored the KO.

I meant a jab with actual snap, not Loughran's crappy pawing one

Sharkey did not have the best chin, but it was more than good enough for what Loughran could dish out!

Then I would have trained Sharkey to avoid the check hook

It was kind of a fluke result. Loughran avenged it later and scored a knockdown in the process.

Loughran had arguably the best jab ever...
