Career suicide? Don't be daft. Canelo is a massive attraction he can go anywhere and make alot of cash.
As somebody else said this isn’t a surprise given the contract made zero sense. How much money were they gonna get out of some of his potential opponents? Smith, Yildrim, BJS, Plant just not good/big enough to warrant that money for Canelo.
Showtime would be good if Channel 5 keep mugging us off with these US PPV fights. He’s rumoured to be fighting Caleb Plant on December 19th in a fight that doesn’t scream PPV to me.
It’s hard to see how DAZN US is going to be a viable platform for much longer, with zero big American or Mexican attractions.
That depends on what their plan is going forward. They still have garcia and haney which is a big fight if promoted correctly. Also will likely have Fury vs AJ. I personally think they are weathering the storm and will make their move next year by trying to make their bigger names fight each other. I can see GGG vs Andrade/ BJS. My guess is DAZN also didn’t see value in the deal they signed with Canelo. Paying him $30m a fight vs the likes of Jacobs was way over market value. They were paying him the equivalent of 1m PPV buys a fight. Which he was only doing against the likes of GGG previously. I think it works both ways as once it Became clear he wouldn’t fight GGG I think DAZN knew none of the other fights generate the money they were paying him. best thing for them to do being a young app is continue trying to sign the best prospects and grow them. Also now they are launching globally I think they can make up the shortfall from the US across other territories much cheaper. If they start putting fights like Parker vs Fa on in Oceania for instance and Zhang on in China that too could be a market as big as the US with zero competition.
Won’t be making a guaranteed $30m a fight. That’s the equivalent of 1m PPV buys. He’s only done that against GGG and Chavez the fights against the likes of Khan sold 600k which would likely bring him a pay cut of atleast $10m in the grand scheme of things DAZN were overpaying him and to get those kind of paydays he needs to be fighting the likes of Charlo every fight and will still likely take less. The ones that will be missing out here are GBP I think Canelo was so unhappy with Oscar he wanted out regardless
He won't be making the kind of money he was on at dazn because they paid way over the odds to sign him obviously but I don't think it's a bad thing for fans because he's not going to be fighting rocky fielding calibre fighters now you would imagine. I like the plant fight btw he's got the style to cause problems for Canelo just not sure if he will be durable enough though.
Thing is he wasn't making the money at DAZN unless it was for certain opponents hence why we are where we are.
