Since Richard M Murrieta and myself had created several Spinks threads in the past few weeks and I got the idea that Leon was not held in high esteem, I was curious as to who you guys think would be the greatest heavyweight of the 20th century that Leon could have beaten.
This has become a more difficult question the more I have thought about it. Starting with Jeffries and going through the champions who followed, I can 't think of any that I would definitely favor 1978 Leon over. Hart and Burns maybe, but those guys were tough, and Burns was fast and could punch despite his small size, and both could go long distances. Leon was a big man and in his title-winning effort had a busy, aggressive style. He would prevail over someone who could not out-maneuver him or who didn't have the punch to hold him off. There are doubtless many top contenders who fit this bill over the years, but as of now I am drawing a blank.....
I would give him a shot vs Ingo though i favour Ingo. Patterson would destroy Leon. Which lineal champ would i favour him over? Burns and maybe Willard. Spinks would lose to Sharkey, Schmeling and yes, to a fully motivated Baer. Answer: Maybe Ingo
A prime Clay would probably take him just as lightly as an older, wiser Clay did, so in that sense he would have shot, as he would against just about any of the smaller HWs. If he could have stayed focus he could have been a decent HW
He'd beat Hart, Burns and Corbett. Dunno about any others. Willard and Briggs, who are the other two worse champions IMO, would beat Spinks.
I think he did about as good as he could've done beating an old Ali. He may have been able to accomplish a similar feet like his brother did against an old Larry Holmes. Most heavyweight champs throughout history would've been just to big for a young Leon Spinks to bother with his aggressive style I think hes much more fit for the cruiserweight division.
