Lou Ambers idol was Tony Canzoneri, who he was a regular training and sparring partner for. You can tell by watching his style, and their own filmed bout together is an entertaining and highly skilled affair.
He considered him one of the greatest ever from Mexico. No doubt he admires him so much because Medel was a hero in Tepito. Did a lot for the community. Zarate was a big fan of the Cuban boxers too. Napoles and Ramos were two he idolized. I asked him about who he has as the greatest Mexicans and he started off Chavez, Ultiminio, Napoles, Medel, Saldivar and then sort of stopped because he didn’t want to leave people out. He’s very friendly with just about all the greats there. Macias was another one he had a lot of admiration for. Medel was very popular in Tepito but unfortunately a lot of Mexicans didn’t like him because he beat Toluco Lopez and Toluco was an idol. He was bigger and more beloved in Japan than he was in Mexico.
Oscar Dela Hoya and Floyd Mayweather have a lot of respect for Julio César Chávez and Alexis Arguello
