Good/Great fighters that didn't get enough credit

Carl Froch.

Great resume, and an amazing run. When he stepped into the scene I don’t think he took a single soft touch/tune-up.

 

He had that one easy fight after Bute.
But that was it.
Had a crazy run indeed.

 

Every single B level fighter I feel. They are at such a high level of boxing that you would idolize them if you sparred with them, but they lose to most of the elite guys so everyone calls them a bum or a nobody.

 

Ricardo Mayorga. That crazy mofo fought everyone who was anyone that he could, and he did it with his chin in the air and daring them to punch. Yeah, he lost most of them, but he made all of them more competitive than they had any right to be, and he DID beat Vernon Forrest twice (which is as legit a win as existed at the time) and the ghost of Francisco Vargas, so there's that.

 

1) ray "sucra" Oliveira: he was a windmill of a puncher, in between champion and fringe contender. He threw over 100 punches per round. Was a great tv fighter in the 90s 2000s. Made from the same ilk as Emmanuel Augustus, Vince Phillips, Vernon Phillips, micky ward and Jesse James Leija. Thrse guys had a little circuit going around, fighting each other in fight of the year type performances.

2) Emanuel Augustus: Kimbo slices cousin
He was a clown (marimaro) but gave Floyd his toughest fight. Fun to watch, breaking the fukkin compubox whenever he fought.

3) cool Vince Phillips: was a world champ. Last i heard he slapped a teen on the butt and got banned from the gym he was training at

4)Vernon Phillips: this guy's whole career goal was to get Oscar in the ring with him. Not a bad goal, being a prize fighter.

5)jjl: beat panchito Bojado, had a epic draw with Micky ward due to a head butt, went nip and tuck with azumah Nelson.

guys that kinda got famous: Micky ward, Arturo Gatti. So they don't belong on the list.

6) a shout out to Omar Weiss, a live dog who fought anybody at 140, Scotty Pemberton and Charles the hatchet brewer.

 

^ acelino Freitas got plenty of love, his wedding was in live tv in Brazil. He was a Hometown hero often walked around the ring on people's shoulders as they celebrated his losses.

 

Outstanding list! Lots of fighter's that appeared on FNF on your list. I would add Kassim Ouma, Julio Gonzalez, Antwan Echols and Eric Harding to that list as well from that era of very good fighters.

 

Two excellent fighters. I have mentioned in other threads before that I have a friend that trained with Jirov at his Arizona gym a few years back. He said he was a great guy that still was in excellent condition. He probably would have had a mich longer career had he just stayed at Cruiserweight. I would have loved to have seen Jirov fight the Don King Cruiserweights Jean Marc Mormeck, O'Neil Bell and Concrete Davis around 2006 or so when they were at the top of the divison. When he moved up to heavyweight and fought Moorer he was at 30 pound plus weight disadvantage and clearly was affected by it.

Kirk Johnson had fast hands and was pretty damn skilled. Very underated.

 

I've always liked Jean Pascal- feel like with better strategies he could have won a lot more fights

Lots of nostalgia. That's when I first started watching boxing. Kendall Holt was good too.
