not often you seek a TKO without a single "power" punch being thrown. Enjoyed the fight but disappointing finish. DDD is 23 - he can come again
I don't blame him at all. It looked nasty, he was IMO quite badly hurt much earlier [wasn't he whispering something to his traimer, out of micshot, at one point?] and the very sudden extra swelling after that shot spelled trouble to me.
It was a wise decision to quit, I said that he felt a sharp pain and lost vision completely in the affected eye. Health comes first, fight another day.
In the corner before the last round his trainer was saying 'don't let him take your belts' and Dubois said something to him and the trainer leant forward. I couldn't tell what it was, but the body language, everything about him screamed 'make it stop'. It's obviously a big call, there was a lot riding on the result and he was still well in the fight with a chance of a KO or a kind decision from Frank's judges. With the benefit of hindsight though, his trainer could've been the one getting the blame for being overprotective, which everyone would understand, rather than DDD suddenly being seen as a quitter. I've never been that badly hurt with someone of Joe Joyce's size pummeling me. So I don't blame him also. Plenty others will though and he'll have to do some rebuilding, hopefully with less hype and more attention to slow and steady building his skills.
I’ve been there, I’ve had swelling and damage around the eye and I will testify that when you take another blow to that area the pain is excruciating! It does not feel like a soft tissue pain it really does feel like there’s something structural damaged and maybe it’s a permanent injury! The first time you experience it, it’s alarming to the the extreme and it sends some primeval type message to your brain about protecting it and surviving. At 23 with tonight’s experience in the bag, Dubois can and will come again as a better version of himself.
The internet tough guys whose biggest injury fear is getting a paper cut at work are questioning the heart of a pro fighter. Awesome.
Why is the idea of quitting because of the potential of blindness a bad thing? You guys are ******s who think quitting is bad when you're in a situation like that... Its actually smart to quit and not neanderthal like
Tough break but his eye was completely finished. He didn't quit when the eye went rounds earlier or quit because he wanted to stop trying. . He suffered a handicap that Joyce caused by a thousand jabs and got tko'd. . If you can't continue you can't continue . There's no or shouldn't be any shame in admitting defeat to the better man
Eye pain is no joke. I've had eye pain and it's an intense pain, it shuts you down like nothing else. Once that left eye started swelling it was just a matter of time.
You see, I don't think he will. The hype over this guy was like nothign I have ever seen. People were talking about him being the hardest-hitting British heavyweight ever. Seriously. I think that is all gone. He is going to have to earn it now.
The guy had a huge guy jackhammering his eye closed for 10 rounds. Yes, he quit because he couldn’t see and the end was nigh. There’s a good chance the ref was stopping that fight soon. The more he got hit in the eye, the worse it became. The worse it became, the more Joyce was able to target it, and did. With that eye deteriorating round by round, a stoppage became inevitable. All credit to Joyce.
it was the smartest thing to do. Joyce wouldnt stop targeting that eye and the swell was already horrible. cant compare a points win with healthy eyes. he didnt quit.
