Would he of quit if he had been winning handily, albeit with a damaged eye. He knew it was an uphill battle. Why not roll the dice, press the left glove against the damaged area to try and protect it and fire in a few right handers in the hope of landing. It has happened before in boxing. Castillo vs Corrales springs to mind. Great fight for those that have not seen it. Guillermo Jones vs Dennis Leberdev. Horrendous injury.
Inexperience played as big a part as the injury. Hopefully, Daniel makes a complete recovery and embraces what’s happened, using it to drive forward a better fighter.
Better to happen now, rather than later.

The standard has been set so high by many many fighters of all different levels, for decade after decade. It was disappointing to see Daniel take the knee for the count. I do not wish to see fighters permanently hurt. The boxing game is not risk free and takes masses of bottle when it gets tough. Some fighters have more than others. And like it or lump it, we as fans love to see fighters go above and beyond, that’s one of the reasons this sport so special, and that is why they are called Fighters.

Are they any worse than a fighter being knocked unconscious and allowed to continue after a knockdown? If anything a hard knockdown should be more reason to quit/stop the fight.

Daniel would not have known the extent of his injuries. He knew he was hurt but no way would he of known to what extent. He couldn’t see out of one eye, that was obvious. It was swollen shut. If his injuries are as you say, he made a brilliant health conscious decision. But, there is no way he would of known the extent of the injury. Now, if it turned out his eye was badly bruised or scratched eyeball etc, accompanied with bad pain, how would that of been perceived?
We are making excuses for him based on medical evaluation after the event. I am in no way slating Daniel, he gave what he could and it was a step too far.

I hope he makes a full recovery and gets back in contention.

I didn’t know about the medical evaluation until about 4 pages into this thread mate. I just went off what @Dragon Punch mentioned about Dubois saying he couldn’t see out the eye. If you can’t see out of your eye because it is swollen shut surely the fight should be stopped?

    Exactly mate.

Plus, you'd likely know something was wrong, just like when you pull a muscle out running, your back goes, or you have severe skull pain around your eye that is being punched by a 18 stone heavyweight boxer.

I knew there was something wrong just by sitting on my fat arse watching with a beer in my hand, I didn't need to be getting hit in the face to confirm it.

All this talk of quitting, being a quitter is ridiculous.

How about a big thanks to both guys for putting it on the line, regardless of who you support.

Coward/quitter doesn't sit easy with me, these guys get in a ring and fight and deserve 100%+ respect for doing so whatever the outcome.

Fighters know when something is wrong and at times are made to carry on.

Example Gerard MCclellan, it was obvious to the world that something was wrong with him, he took a knee and was labelled a quitter live on TV by the commentators, and look what happened after.

I do not blame Dubois for having the sense to know something was wrong and ending things, in my opinion he did the right thing, but to label the guy a quitter when he is clearly nothing of the sort, but a very good young fighter who will come again.

I see the company men Bellew and Macklin are out in force calling Dubois a quitter. Didn’t see the same comments when AJ quit. Bellew was angrily calling people out for calling AJ a quitter.

He did you’re right. He was still fighting then though. Since he retired he’s become unbearable with the Matchroom bias.

There’s a lot of people on here who probably moan like a ***** when they just get a headache, criticising a kid with a broken eye socket and optical nerve damage for knowing the game was up and that he was completely done. Yes he quit, and as a fighter it took more guts for him to do that than many realise.
