I've always found it weird that people must go out on their shield. Save yourself serious injury, learn your lessons, come back better another day.
Yes still a quitter. Unless he gave himself a scan between rounds he would have no idea what the problem was, he felt pain and took a knee. Next time he feels pain, he will take a knee.
Yes Dubois did quit, was he hurt yes, the final Joyce punch could well have caused a intense pain, often touching one area of a injury causes acutest of pain, but once Dubois was kneeling it did not look like he was still in acute pain. Rightly or wrongly quitting mid round by appearing to say "NO Mas" is viewed negatively, i personally did not call the fight prior to the bout as i saw it as 50/50, being unsure whose approach would prevail, so my opinion on DDD quitting is a objective view. Several former champions called it as Dubois quitting, doubting his heart etc, so it not just us keyboard warriors. First off Dubois has got to get himself mended physically namely his eye damage, however getting himself sorted mentally i say will be a harder task. It is all well and good looking impressive when knocking over opponents, but likewise when you face level of opponent that does not fall over and indeed still fights back and puts some hurt on you, that is the time to see if you can bite down on gumshield and show you are willing to fight in the trenches. I hope they can rebuild Dubois as he is young, has decent heavy hands and enters the ring in shape, however they gotta work on his mental toughness and confidence for when the going gets tough, that is gonna be the challenging bit.
I don’t think the UK dominates boxing. The UK is a significant player no doubt with a passionate boxing following. What happened to Dubois is no shock. I was one of the few along with David Haye and Don Charles who picked Joyce to win and it was no shock or surprise to me. I personally blame Dubois promoter and team for throwing him into the deep end before he was ready. His level of competition prior to this was a joke. Though talented he was overhyped against a more seasoned, tougher and experienced warrior. In this game you need more than just power.
The stick he is getting is because of the hype machine behind him. We were being told he would beat AJ, Wilder and Fury etc when frankly I am not sure he beats Fabio Wardley, Hughie Fury, Dillion Whyte or even David Adeleye.
If he even looked like he was trying to protect his eye before giving up it would have been something.
You know what, **** em all, the lot of them. The pundits, the boxers who use this to make themselves seem like the bigger man because they haven't, 'so-called 'quit. When boxers are on hospital beds, sipping out of a straw, in an empty changing room after a loss, when the glitz and glamour are over, are any of these people there to help you pick up the pieces? No. So **** their opinion.
People gave Vitali and Golota stick for "quitting" when they had serious injuries. Fighters are the ones who have to live with the potential health problems/career ender from going out on their shield. Only they know what their body is going through in there and people should respect their decision to tap out imo.
Just another thing about all the stick Dubois is getting, how do we expect more people to follow boxing if we "fans" label a competitor as a quitter so harshly. The fight on Saturday was on BT Sport in the UK. It's a subscription service but not PPV meaning they hopefully got good viewing figures. If a casual watches it, see's Dubois lose, are they going to have any interest in watching the guy fight again after seeing him called a quitter by pundits and other boxers? You know, the same guy that they saw being hyped to watch because of the promotion before the fight. It just doesn't make sense, this is why the sport is dying and another reason why so little funding is available. We know that it's going to be difficult for Dubois to rebuild his career if he chooses to do so. But isn't that essentially always the case for someone who loses a fight by stoppage/injury.
Talk about getting off to a bad start, Olu. I stopped reading at this part ''I don't think the UK dominates boxing''
what? how is the sport dying? what evidence do you have of that? and how is boxing going to grow when quitting becomes acceptable? hey coach, that last punch really hurt. **** it son, lay it down, they dont know what youre going through.
Under the bareknuckle rules, the fight went until one of the fighters quit. That's about 200 years with many of the most brutal fights ever,
