I like Roy Jones vs Nigel Benn as one that would have been entertaining.

Roberto Duran vs Tony Ayala. I think Duran would have schooled him but fun while it lasted.

Trinidad vs Quartey would have been high contact.

Tyson vs Foreman would have been an event.

Terry Norris vs James Toney. Early 90s this would have been a marquee fight. Norris had the quickness and movement to perhaps give James fits. I believe at some point a focused Toney knocks him senseless. Still a good match.

Wilfred Benitez v Marvin Hagler - if it happened right after Benitez had shut out Duran. I believe Hagler would have won but it could have been an interesting fight.

Roy Jones v Gerald McClellan. This was apparently supposed to happen if McClellan got past Nigel Benn.

If Hamsho could ruin Benitez how he did, then I have no doubt that what Hagler would have done to him should never be sanctioned.

No you are just asking a questions that are unanswerable. Were humans to view such spectacles our eyes would pour from their sockets in awe. So we'll never know who wins.

Yeah, people always dismiss this fight and tend to think of the shot brain damaged Wilfred Benítez being beaten by Hamsho, Davey Moore and others. In hindsight, Benítez obviously should have retired several years earlier than he did. It is very sad what happened to him. But if you went back to 1981 and 1982 with no knowledge of the tragic fate in store for Benítez (nor how far he would decline as a boxer in such a short space of time) then Hagler v Benítez would have been a perfectly viable big fight to suggest. No crazier (in fact less crazy one might argue) than something like Meldrick Taylor moving up to fight the bigger, more powerful, and equally swift Terry Norris.

I have a back issue of Ring Magazine (from 81 or 82 I think) where Jose Torres had an entertaining article about a Hagler v Benítez fight. Torres felt that Benítez would give Hagler problems in the early rounds with his slickness. Maybe that article has always stuck in my head. It could also be the fact that we were only one fight away from getting the Five Kings instead of the Four Kings (in such a scenario Benítez would have been afforded more retrospective fame and appreciation). I agree with you though that Hagler would have won.

It was originally in negotiations probably around late 1980 or early 1981, as Pryor talked about it after he beat Lennox Blackmoore in June 1981. Leonard lost to Duran in June 1980, Pryor beat Cervantes in August 1980, and Leonard beat Duran in November 1980.

Leonard offered Pryor $500k, Pryor rejected it because he wanted more money.

Leonard was just bigger and better. Pryor probably could have made 135, and Leonard was not some ordinary WW champ, he was one of the best 147 lb. fighters ever.

Yeah, I think that would have a very good fight. I think Trinidad bounces back from a slow start to stop Ike in the mid to late rounds.

They almost fought in 1998. Quartey was originally supposed to fight Whitaker in April 1998, but Whitaker failed a drug test. Then there was negotiations for Quartey-Trinidad later that year, but also Quartey received offers to fight Oscar, so he fought DLH in early 1999.

There was some promotional issues that came into play.

Knowing the way Oscar's team operated I'm sure they were more willing to face Quartey after they saw him get put down a couple times by Lopez. Before that Gil Glancy was saying Ike had the best chin he ever witnessed.
