Would Calzaghe have been able to beat prime Marvin Hagler?

He had a hard time making 168, so I don't see how he could have made 160, especially with a same day weigh-in.

He was coming down from 190-200 pounds.

He would had to have fought at LHW.

 

You saw his ribs at weigh-ins.

 

This is a tough fight for Marvin. It matters if Marvin can use hsi jab. Remember this, Joe's reach was73 inches and Marvin's was 75.. So if Marvin could use his jab and make it a technical fight he could win, but the size of Joe and his foot speed look like a problem.

 

Ligth heavy weight for sure.

 

In the 80's Calzaghe would be a LHW.

 

I think Joe takes a UD and fairly comfortably, not easy mind you but at least a four point gap on the cards. As much as I love Hagler he was not a big middleweight and fighting essentially a very good light heavyweight would be too much.

 

The outcome of this fight depends largely on whether it's at SMW or LHW, and when the weigh-in takes place.

Bearing in mind that I don't consider JC a "great" LHW, there aren't many fights to go on of JC at LHW and they were not against "great" LHWs either. For example, if JC was a LHW in the 70s-early 80s, I don't think he would beat Eddie Mustafa, Galindez, Saad, Braxton, Johnson, Scott, Conteh, Spinks. For example, he would imo have his hands full with Yaqui.

LHW previous day weigh-in - JC likely too big for MMH.
LHW same day weigh-in - JC favourite still.
SMW - previous day weigh-in; This is getting closer to pick-em for me, I thInk MMH could beat ANYBODY who JC beat at SMW & I think MMH could concede some weight & beat JC - the question is - how much?

I am not convinced that JC wouyld have a speed advantage over MMH; he's not stopping MMH at SMW and I believe that MMH could hurt JC and/or outbox him.

SMW - same day weigh-in - the pendulum swings further in MMH's favour.

As for the theory tht MMH could make 147 - I would be surprised if MMH could have made that weight from about the age of 17 or 18 onwards.

Very easy answer NO !!!!!!!!!!! Marvellous Marvin would have destroyed Slappy. Thats if they ever forced him into the ring dont forget he even tried to duck Lacy claiming injury but Enzo made him fight

 

If Calzaghe had to make 160 and fight 8 hours later, he would die before Hagler could kill him.

 

Marvin would laugh at Joe's pitty pat slaps walk straight through them & destroy him Joe might be a LHW but he slapped like girl dont forget lol

 

You guys are gonna give yourselves strokes worrying about this weigh-in thing. While it's not meaningless, the size disparity isn't huge enough to give this to Joe on size alone.

Early 80s Hagler would beat Calzaghe, weights be damned.

He was too skilled, too accurate, and too versatile for Calz.

Calzaghe has a very good chance of beating the 87 Hagler, but not the 81-83 Hagler.

 

Hagler seemed like he had telescopic arms sometimes. He looked like he hit people from the other side of the ring. His reach always looked even longer than 75 inches. This is the reason I think he could have handled bigger fighters. Joe is probably just a bit too big for Hagler.

 

Good points about Hagler's weight. When he was an amateur, he fought in the 165 division.
