Floyd was a very negative fighter yet broke PPV records in the boxing world, why was this?

Because he was as sublimely skilled and undefeated. Also he hyped himself prodigiously. And there was a dearth of quality free fights available in his heyday compared to the good old days.

Yea that too. Good point. He was such a loudmouth but he could back it up to the utter frustration of many incredulous fans.

People buy into hype and talk over anything else. That's not slighting Mayweather's excellent skills or dedication, but few casual fans tuned into his fights for the thrills and fireworks. But Floyd could sell a fight, as mentioned, by playing the villain and compelling people to take sides for his fights. I can't even begin to mention how many times I tried to warn casual friends that they'd be better off saving their hard earned cash with many of his fights as far as entertainment value went, but the hype was enough, and sure enough, I heard "you were right" in that regard, many times.

How did he back up his loud mouth ?? By running away like a drunken ballerina & having Vegas officials & the NSAC covering his back to ensure he never lost a decision or failed any test

I was out of town on business with two co-workers in Houston when he fought Canelo. Got them to go along to a sports bar with me to watch.

Both know sports and I’d call them casual boxing fans. Neither had seen much of Floyd other than highlights and maybe his Olympic fights, but they were astounded at his skill in not being hit (often standing right in front of Canelo) and speed and countering ability.

So his gifts were something non-hardcore fans could appreciate.

People like to tear down anyone successful (see the poster above me) but the guy was basically untouchable.

Only boring to those who don’t know boxing. He displayed every trick in the book.

People want to be affiliated in some way to the best and floyd was perceived to be the best plus he could sell a fight.

Do you guys actually know any people who ordered his fights because they really wanted to watch him lose in real time? I've always wondered about those haters and how pissed they must have been watching their hopes (and dollars) go down the drain.

his rope a dope vs Canelo, Cotto, and even in the early rounds against Pac was pretty classic. anytime I hear the term 'runner ' I know I'm speaking with either a casual or a hater

I for one never found Floyd boring. Floyd was all about timing and imposing his mental pressure on an opponent and making them quit mentally. classic examples of this were his fights with Judah, ODH, and Miguel Cotto. in every one of those fights the first half seemed to go his opponents, but by the late rounds he would be toying with them. for me that's high stakes drama playing out minute by minute.
sure everyone loves a Ward Gatti fight, but honestly I've seen two homeless guys at the bus stop duke ot out the same way.
also whether you like it or not, after years of boxing establishment types like Larry Merchant, Brian Kenny and others going out of their to tarnish and diminish Mayweathers greatness, he built up quite a cult following, myself included. Floyd became kind of a peoples champion to those of us who have experienced being slighted by the powers that be, or by society in general

One of the most memorable moments i had during a Mayweather fight was Maidana 1. One of the movie theatres was displaying it live so I went to watch it with a few friends. To my left was a short chubby old black lady with round glasses. I assumed she was there with her husband but she was apparently by herself and a huge boxing fan.

Not a peep came out of her during the undercard. Even the underrated gem of Khan vs Collazo didn't trigger anything. But as soon as Maidana managed to get Mayweather to the ropes and started unloading on him it was like some thing ignited in her soul.

"HIT THAT SUNNAVABICH! YEAH! KNOCK HIS BALD HEADED ASS OUT! THATS RIGHT, DONT LET HIM OFF THE ROPES, KEEP SWINGING. THAT PHILLY SHELL AINT SH!T!!!".

She was screaming and hollering while practically leaping out of her chair as if it were a wrestling match. I had to bite my tongue not to laugh and the crowd was going absolutely wild seeing Mayweather struggle so much for once so I couldn't concentrate for some of the rounds. But man was that a funny moment that caught me off guard.

People like this really do exist and live to see Floyd lose. I'm in a boxing group on Facebook and even though he retired more than 4 years ago, people just cannot stop making posts and threads about him taking shots at his record or style (at least 30-50 every day, even weekdays!).
