Quarry took him out at 2:17 round one, give or take a few seconds. In Shavers defense his other KO losses were due to exhaustion and being hurt.
Ok thx. But there is no "defense" for him. He was a very good guy but highly overrated when you compare him to Ali, Formeman, Frazier, but also to other guys like Holmes, Tyson, Liston, Holyfield, Lewis or even the Klitschko brothers. I doubt he would have been favorite against anyone i just mentioned. He was never on the level of a legend or dominator. His punching power yes, but not his overall package as a fighter. Still ppl compare him with Ali, Foreman and Frazier.
Tyson early and brutally. This would make Shavers' KO losses to Lyle and Quarry look downright peaceful!
Jerry Quarry is a phenomenal top contender who would have been a champion for sure if he didn't fight in the golden era. He had a chin made out of titanium and he was a disaster match up for Earnie to deal with as his knockout artistry was by far his biggest advantage. I have the complete opposite than yours and in my eyes Shavers is extremely underrated and not overrated as he basically knocked out Larry Holmes but Holmes was too tough to just get up after he regained his consciousness by landing with his head on the canvas. Earnie was maybe the most dangerous heavyweight possible after Foreman and Liston, he had great combos, jab and he was very unpredictable which made him even much more terrifying while he was the most powerful boxer to ever live
Maybe the most dangerous heavyweight pre 80s. Shavers would lose to guys as mediocre as James Smith, I mean he lost to Randall Cobb. I would definitely consider Tua more dangerous
Saw Shavers late in his run video looks fake compared to the real thing I saw him squash some guy my size through his gloves in sparring and make him quit i stayed on the bag that day
Yeah and Bernardo Mercado, but I think he was clearly past his prime already and Cobb had maybe the best chin that existed just look how Larry Holmes annihilated him for 12 rounds straight
Honestly Tyson is really damn overhyped. He never beat anyone both prime and all time great, and in his prime when he was an "unbeateable force of nature" he arguably drew with James Tillis, struggled with an injured Tony Tucker and went the distance with Mitch Green and James Smith. The only reason Shavers isn't ranked as high as the all time greats is that Holmes somehow got up from the most devastating punch the boxing world has ever seen when he was actually out cold before hitting the canvas! Think about it, if only Holmes stayed out cold, Shavers would have been well known as an all time great without a doubt
