Green is up on points due to his frantic pace, until Jones let's his hands go and lands a bomb which levels Davey Boy. Can't really see it going any other way either to be honest. Collin isn't gonna be up on points at any time, and I can't believe Dave remains unhit for 15, with his defence - or lack thereof - and insessant desire to entertain and brawl.
Go with George, spot on prognosis , continuing the British Welter match up, Stracey v Charles , always thought this would result in a fairly even match up on paper. Stracey prob the harder hitter, always in shape, puts pressure on opponents incessantly, BUT Palomino casts doubt over his resistance to body punches, and maybe, just maybe a tendency to " show out " when hurt. Charles a sturdy strong fighter, out of the Lawless camp, so a similar style to Straceys, could be out boxed by fleet footed opponents, but usually caught them up and did some damage. Nether of them cut unduly, both had good chins overall, so George whos your pic and why ?. keep well.
It always surprises me when people lump these two together. I've never understood it, honestly. Dave "Boy" Green was a level above Colin Jones. He beat John Stracey. Andy "Hawk" Price. Was winning the title fight with Carlos Palomino before he got caught late. Colin Jones didn't beat anyone. Green wins handily.
I like this one. Davey Boy was better than most realize because they only remember his highlight-reel KO losses. When DBG went down, he went down like he was shot. Way back I worked with a club fighter who was diabetic and when he got hit hard it was the same way — sometimes he’d get up in time, sometimes not, but the instant he went down you’d have believed a sniper in the stands had pegged him with a rifle shot. I think Davey Boy has his way for 10 rounds and after that it gets dicey. But I don’t think Jones is the guy. Who is going to land that big shot to take him out this time so Green takes a decision. (I’m more comfortable picking this outcome over 12 than 15, however.)
Dave Boy Green wins this fight on points over Colin Jones. Remember the pace that Green set in his title bout loss to then WBC World Welterweight Champion Carlos Palomino on June 14 1977, in London, England, before Carlos landed that devastating left hook in round 11, that ended the bout. Jones fought well against then WBA World Welterweight Champion Donald Curry on January 19 1985 in London, England, before being stopped in round 4. But I think that Green would swarm all over Jones, forcing a fire fight quick paced bout.
Interesting , seems I stand alone on this one, against some very knowledgeably posters in particular RMM agree with him on most topics sept this one ! I rate Jones, pretty sure if he connects on the button ( left or right, don't forget ) vast amounts of WW go over, and go over hard, lots for the count, sure a slow starter of sorts, but guys you knew he only needed a glimmer of light and POW end off, one of the stiffest jabs on record, he meant to hurt with this punch, not ranch find, like most , his body punches compare with the best, the ones he slammed in against Hans Eric Palm were painful to behold, and the aforementioned left and rights were devastating. I go with Green building up a lead maybe ? if he left a gap ! good night folks, for me Jones would find Dave's chin ( not unlike Carlos did ) at some stage, prob late in, but find it he will, c'mon Green wasn't hard to hit, so sorry fellow posters, its Jones for me.
I get where people are coming from favouring Green, he set a relentless pace and basically just went out there to tear the other guys head off, there was never much finesse! Jones’ chin was sound though and he was a durable fighter in his own right, I don’t think he’s going anywhere here he’s in it for the long haul. At some point Jones is going to tag Davey Boy and especially if it’s at a point in the fight when Green has expended a lot of energy he’ll be knocked out.
I'd agree with the sentiments of the OP, that a Green/Jones bout would seem to be an evenly matched fight, but I agree more with those backing Green to win this one. Jones was a solid boxer, but the kudos he receives is largely derived from the two close runs (on paper) with McCrory, as well as a reputation for having power. The problem I have with this is that I think McCory won both of those matches fairly comfortably and that Jones' power was not really proven at the top level. I don't doubt Jones carried good power, but his delivery was not the best, in my view, and he was sparing in his output. To be honest, I think he'd be overwhelmed by Green, with neither the timing nor the accuracy to do enough damage and stop him in his tracks, a la Palomino. Moreover, I tend not to bet on the guy, who I think is going to need a KO to win.
What a great match up. Green beat an over the Hill Price. I don't see Green beating a Laing honestly. Jones had tremendous power Green didn't. Further more Green is going to come to Jones and thats a problem when you have a leaky defence like Green. Mccroy was 6'1 and moved and Jones still caught and hurt him. I pick Jones tko9. Too much power and Jones had the better fundamentals.
The thing with Jones is his shots were short and compact. He also had a better defence then given credit for. You can see him parrying shots and then trying to counter. And he went to the body extremely well. Very underrated boxer. I'd pick Jones vs Hatton.
Cobra, I disagree that Green beat an over-the-hill Andy Price. Price was 24 years old and Green interrupted his best streak that resulted in Price going against Sugar Ray Leonard. Green beat an absolute prime Andy the Hawk. What Price had that Jones didn't was speedy combos, yet Green still outpointed him. Jones could be frustrating because all his punches were thrown in ones. One jab, one right hand, one left hook. Mostly, this was enough because of his power and I think the rest of his game suffered due to this. If he could have learned combination punching he would have been something. If Green and Jones met, these two wouldn't have had to go looking for each other. Jones had the kind of jaw that could withstand Green's muckspreader. However, people look down on Green's chin as soft. At his peak, which was against Piedvache, Stracey and Palomino, he had a rock-jaw. But that 11th round left hook changes his career like Weaver's did to Tate and Rosario's shot did to Bramble and Hearn's did to Cuevas. They just weren't sturdy anymore and neither was Green. But prime Green I would pick to out-hustle Jones. He never stopped punching and Jones - like I said - punched in ones. If one is hinging everything on that one lucky punch, that could be a fool's bet. I will say, however, that even a prime Green swelled and cut badly. I think this would just be a terrific fight and I would go with Green on points prime for prime.
