It is June 27 1988, standing across from champion Mike Tyson is challenger, 1982 Gerry Cooney. Instead of Michael Spinks, it is Cooney, it is a 15 Round title bout. Can Gerry catch Mike first? Or would Tyson just grin and blast away at Gerry, making it another short night?

By 1988 Gerry Cooney was finished. And it would have been especially evident against THAT version of Tyson. Can’t see this lasting more than a round or two... prime Cooney would have lost to Mike as well, but it might have been a decent match for several rounds

Tyson would have won easily unless the arse from my avatar was pointing at him from ringside.

u would think Tyson of course, because he had some good defense, and also had a way of getting inside while avoiding damage. And while inside was better in close. Gerry would have to nail him early. For some reason i'll go with cooney, but hard to pick

If Tyson landed the kind of clean shots Holmes landed early in their fight. A very short night for Cooney. Tyson all wrong for Gerry. 4rds..... Maybe earlier.

On a personal level I'd like cooney to do well....but the only decent showing cooney made after 1982 was 1 round vs foreman...than he got knocked out...cooney just didnt know how to tie up or push back a smaller guy in Spinks he got beatwn up therr....But this is the unbeaten 1982 cooney...yes holmes hurt him early...but it was a suprise flash knockdown....i thibk cooney fights fire with fire....i see it as similar to the 1989 bruno fight but more competitive with it lasting 7 rounds and gerry ecen winning 2 rounds and hurting tyson in the 1st and 4th

I will give my take on this hypothetical matchup. First all, Mike Tyson was no old relic from a rest home that Gerry Cooney was used to going against. that some fans that had daddy issues liked to see. I was not impressed, I think that Jerry Quarry was a much better prepared fighter, not a cash cow for some wealthy goon. But I think that Mike Tyson would not fear Gerry at all, he has faced big hitters before, and Mike had better balance, where poor Gerry did not, kind of clumsy when throwing his left hook, if a good proven contender moved out of the way, Cooney might tip over. Also Mike had a better chin, he would dig those deadly shots into the lanky torso of Cooney. Tyson by KO 2.

    Tyson early ko.

Too much speed. He'd land first.

Cooney's best bet is to try and hug a la Bonecrusher.

Would be exciting waiting for this to happen Richard!
But for the actual fight, I don't see it getting past the first round tbh, maybe into the second at a push.
Tyson does what he can do best, and come roaring out to meet Cooney. I see Jerry try and score first himself but Tyson s shots strike the iron.
We would see Cooney knocked down early fast. Like I said, he may get to round two, but no further, this is Tyson at his prime killing stage.

With Cooney you have to sort of take him apart a little, you cannot just rush in
