Osvary David Morrell Gutierrez Jr born January 18th 1998 is a 6'1 Super Middleweight with a 4-0 3 KO's record. Born in Santa Clara, Cuba and fighting out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Unlike many of his fellow countrymen, who waste years of their lives working their ways through the ranks of the Cuban amateur system, David decided to haul ass at a far earlier age of 20, first to Mexico, and then eventually to Minnesota, ad made his pro debut at the tender age of 21, after only one semi-pro match in the WSB back in 2017. And in my opinion, it's a damn good thing, because Morrell is as all action as they come. He's not like many of his fellow slick Cubans, who love nothing more than to bore the audience into a semi-catatonic stupor, he bring the heat throughout, always looking to land a KO blow. Now will this catch up to him against a heavy handed opponent? Possibly, but for what i's worth, he has decent head movement and fairly good defense for a front foot heavy fighter. He's being put on the fast track by PBC, who he signed with, which is odd for them, but it's also a testament to how much drive he has and how much faith they have in his prodigious talents. Like I said, he's excellent on the front foot, but has also shown that he's quite adept on the backfoot as well. He throws from awkward angles, even more awkward than usual from a southpaw, and his offense is his defense, because with all the angles, combined with the fast combinations, his opponents have no idea what to prepare for. He seems like a true natural, hopefully he doesn't run headlong into an old dog, that has a few more tricks left up his sleeve, and have his momentum derailed, although he's fighting to bring his family over from Cuba, so I doubt he'd let that slow him down too much. Thus far he already ahs two relatively impressive wins on his resume, he took the 0 of Lennox Allen, who while on the older side, he's fairly crafty, knows ow to survive, and is not an easy fight that early in someone's career. But David made it look easy, and shut him out from bell to bell. He followed that up by absolutely demolishing the usually fairly durable poor Mike Gavronski, who he managed to stop in the same amount of time as Jesse Hart. While not a stunning win, for a 22 year old in his 4th fight, it's damn impressive. So Check Out The Santa Clara Cannon In Action. He's really impressed me in the two fights I've seen of his. He's fast, seems to pack a reasonably heavy dig, throws a lot of leather and puts his shots together well, and I particularly like his sneaky uppercuts. I'm curious to see if he can keep that pace up though because, as said, he throws a lot of leather.
He looks good and entertaining Great volume puncher, accurate and appears to be heavy-handed Looking forward to watching his rise
He can, watch his fight with Lennox Allen and you'll see he kept it up for 12 rounds in his third pro bout.
We have experienced a different Minnesota from each other then. Played a chess tournament in Rochester, one attempted mugging, one break in to my Airbnb. Never returned. Anyways, Morrell has an amazing punch selection and a very crafty uppercut. I am still cautious about him and wonder if he can take a shot as well as he gives them.
I like Morrell; the only concern I have is that his head stays on line sometimes while throwing, which can allow opponents to land their counters. Allen (who's not bad, mind you) clipped him clean a couple of times early in the fight. Sometimes he squares up while throwing his combos, too. Also, I think with better shot selection (less looping punches and a few more straight shots) he might have been able to finish Gavronski in the first or second when he had him hurt early. But, he's only four fights in. There's a lot there to work with.
Actually, I think that was one of his fights I saw. I don't think I saw more than a few rounds though. But even going 12 rounds in just his third bout is impressive, let alone being able to keep up that pace throughout it
I'm convinced he can be a phenom. He's got a very high level of skill, technique and poise for a man of his age.
