I don’t understand the obsession with half dead Ali. He was pretty much ****ed by 1978. These match ups are basically torture porn.
Brutal early to mid round stoppage for Cooney. An Ali laying on the ropes like he did against Holmes is like suicide against Cooney. As good as Ali's chin was, Cooney would just flay away with his hooks to the body resulting in several broken ribs. Ref or corner would quickly stop it.
I agree 100%. Why even hypothetically match a man who has Parkinson's Disease & had lost all his remarkable physical skills, save for guile & a chin, against any World Class boxer? It seems morbid, even cruel.
Ali did surprisingly well against berbick. But I think cooney was just too fast and lethal left hook. He would slauhgter ali in a rd or two. I remember someone asking ali if he would fight cooney and him saying someting like, you crazy? Cooney hits too hard
This fight is right up Gerry Cooney's alley, he will only look good fighting the elderly. He would have gotten beat by a peak Tim Witherspoon, Greg Page, Pinklon Thomas, or a peak 1967 Muhammad Ali. Ron Lyle, Ken Norton, and Jimmy Young had seen better days. Ernie Terrell was lucky that Gerry's management did not drag him out of retirement to fight their cash cow in 1981. Cooney would have literally hurt Ali at that time, very unfair as Ali already had Parkinson's Syndrome. Not to be disrespectful, but why not bring Jake La Motta out of retirement to fight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler in 1981 too? Or maybe Gerry fights Ingo in 1981.
I totally agree with you, but it does not matter that Ali had lasted 10 rounds with Trevor Berbick in 1981, Muhammad Ali started boxing professionally in 1960, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was President Of The United States. it is kind of sad and sadistic to see a young man brutalize a legend. He is afraid to fight fighters that are in their primes, too bad, maybe someone should report Cooney to Adult Protective Services, Gerry must have issues with his father.to fight elderly fighters.
