Biggest American star at the time not ever. Although he is one of the biggest ever as well.

Right behind Ali and Tyson who are two of the biggest stars in any sport of all time.

Ali was one of the biggest sporting stars of all-time.
The rumble in the jungle was watched by a record estimated television audience of 1 billion viewers worldwide, becoming the world's most-watched live television broadcast at the time. This included a record estimated 50 million viewers watching the fight pay-per-view on closed-circuit theatre TV. The fight grossed an estimated $100 million (inflation-adjusted $500 million) in worldwide revenue. Decades later, the bout would be the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary film, When We Were Kings.

Muhammad Ali was massive. I don't know if we will ever see another fighter like him again. Iconic.

He's not. If Tyson and many others were in their prime during the social media era, they'd easily do better numbers.

    Agreed.

So was Dempsey. Problem is the living witnesses of the time are now gone.

I don't think culturally (meaning the united states) we are able to have that kind of widespread appreciation for a fighter anymore, the kind that once existed for Dempsey, and still does to a degree with Ali.

Try this Get a pic of Floyd in his street clothes & ask fans who is this person? Hardly anyone who's not a rabid boxing fan would know. Now show them the same pics of Ali & Tyson EVERYONE knows them. This fact is what keeps Floyd holding his circus acts with MMA fighters & little Japanese teenagers. He's INSANELY JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    No, they're not.

'Floyd Mayweather became America's biggest boxing star,
    This content is protected
    ?'

What do you think they mean by 'emulate his success'? Become bigger than Ali and Tyson too? Or become the country's biggest boxing star of their time? Like Mayweather was of his.

Are you seriously suggesting Sky Sports think Devin Haney could become America's greatest ever boxer? You think that's the premise of this article?

    That’s
    dope tactic.[7]
Why would you be so silly to act like it’s not true without looking it up properly and looking a mug lol.
The fight was watched by a record estimated television audience of 1 billion viewers worldwide,[8][9] becoming the world's most-watched live television broadcast at the time.[10] This included a record estimated 50 million viewers watching the fight pay-per-view on closed-circuit theatre TV.[5] The fight grossed an estimated $100 million (inflation-adjusted $500 million) in worldwide revenue.[11][12] Decades later, the bout would be the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary film, When We Were Kings. All you have to do is Wikipedia the rumble in the jungle it’s there

Floyd Mayweather Jr is now inactive as a professional boxer so we can compare him to the past greats

LOL he doesn't hold a candle to Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson in terms of popularity, notoriety, fame, recognition, or any other word that's used to describe how well known someone is.

Ali may have been the most recognizable human on Earth at one point. People in remote villages knew who he was. His legacy is beyond boxing. Tyson was around that level as well if not a shade below it.

He's levels below the boxers in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. I can name maybe 30 boxers from the top of the head who are beyond Mayweather in popularity. Boxing is not that popular in America today so he likely is the biggest star in America ... It's either him or Wilder peak for peak.
