Top contender of 1983 Tim Witherspoon vs Gerry Cooney of the Larry Holmes title bout. Would Gerry kayo Tim as he had done to his past elderly opponents? Or would Witherspoon expose Gerry to be an unproven contender, a cash cow?

Witherspoon gets robbed and loses a disputed decision like some say he did against Holmes.

That is a good post. Witherspoon is a more proven contender but you may be right. The crooks want Gerry Cooney to win, but Larry still puts him to shame. I have always thought that Jerry Quarry was a much better fighter.

Why do you constantly do Cooney posts? I thought you had no respect for him either. Constantly!!!!!

Witherspoon worked in Cooney’s training camp as a sparring partner. They got rid of him because he was actually getting the better of Cooney in sparring.

Cooney close UD. But he wouldn't put down Tim at any point in the contest.

I do them to see him get demolished, I am with you on his inability to be a real fighter. Witherspoon could do it my friend.

That does not surprise me. Like I have said, he was a cash cow. It is hard to get impressed with a fighter who likes to abuse the elderly, who never fights young proven contenders. Tim Witherspoon would easily beat Cooney, who feared proven young contenders.

I'd have to revisit Goo but from memory all that noise came from the Witherspoon camp. Johnny Davis reckoned he used to whup him too etc. Cooney's mob said he was run out of the ring and quit after 3 days. Don Turner side more to Tim's story.

Regardless i'd favor Tim. Cooney would have the proverbial punchers chance but i think Tim would outbox him.

I don't think Cooney feared young proven contenders. His management wanted the Holmes $$$$ fight so steered him clear of those types.

Btw Witherspoon wasn't all that "proven" when he fought Holmes. His only top 10 Opponent was Snipes and he only just squeaked by him.

I do agree but they used Gerry for that only reason which is selfish on their part, which is very poor management on how to bring up a fighter into serious contender, essentially a novelty cash cow my friend.
