Keita Obara has it 4-2 to Toyoshima according to his twitter....he may face the winner in a JBC/OPBF unification... 7-Toyoshima starting round 7 fast and unleashing some heavy leather, Nagahama trying to fight him off, bombs from both hands from Toyoshima, Nagahama on the ropes is where he gets stopped in previous losses, Toyoshima is relentless here, Nagahama finally creates some space but bnot for long, body shot from Toyoshima, and a right up top sends Nagahama down! Nagahama in trouble towards the end of the round. BIG Toyoshima round. 10-8
8-Toyoshima keeps the pressure on and fights on the inside, Nagahama gritting it out and fighting back, all Toyoshima late and Nagahama spending almost a minute getting hammered on the ropes. Credit to Nagahama for being tough but he's in a massive hole now.
9-Nagahama looks to be gritting his teeth and starting the round with some ambition, Nagahama still landing the bigger blows though and he gets Nagahama on the back foot again, Nagahama doing his best to stay off the ropes, low blow by Nagahama leaves Toyoshima in pain and gets Nagahama a breather, and we're back with Toyoshima landing big lefts hooks, another left from Toyoshima, and an uppercut, a body shot, a straight right and another, Nagahama is gritter but taking a beating, more body work from Toyoshima, and Nagahama tries firing back, commentator gets excited, trading hooks, holy **** what a finish to that round! Open scoring 77-74 and 78-73 (twice)
Heavy low blow there but Toyoshima recovered swiftly..perhaps a little too swiftly? He performs quite well over the next minute, backing Nagahama up and out-scoring him in headshots while the champion gets the better of the body punching, until the last 15 seconds when Toyoshima is raked by some huge powerful looping shots!
10-Nagahama starting well and landings a good jab, a good right, a good right from Toyoshima, Toyoshima with a really good over hand right, Nagahama caught by a left hook, a good right from Nagahama, a short right by Toyoshima, Toyoshima ends the round well. Better Nagahama round overall.
Both throwing combinations from mid-range and then shoeshines on the abdomen upon closing ranks. Nagahama with a spicy right down the pipe and left hook on the body, serving him well. Toyoshima wincing from those body hooks but not backing down, and landing some flush left hooks of his own, turning Nagahama's head around.
11-Toe to toe back and forth in the opening minute, both trying to out muscle and push the other around, Toyoshima gets the better of it, big attack by Toyoshima with Nagahama on the ropes but again the champion grits it out, Toyoshima continues pressing, but Nagahama sees out the round. Nagahama is one tough, gritty, gutsy *******. Well down on the cards but he's not handing that title back without Toyoshima needing to dig deep
Toyo takeover in the 11th; both men feeling the pace, clinching frequently, arm-punching - but Toyoshima is out-scoring him somewhere in the neighborhood of 3:1, even if mostly slapts. Nagahama still jolting him with occasional left hooks and short rights backing up, but only throwing at most two in a row.
12-Nagahama looks to the ropes for sanctuary at the start of the round, not safe there man, and he turns Toyoshima, nice back and forth, nice burst of shots from Nagahama but he's caught and backs off, left hook to the body from Toyoshima, and another, uppercut from Toyoshima, and a left hook up top, Nagahama tries to land a right but it whizzes past Toyoshima, Nagahama rocked, left hook tot he body from Nagahama, and Toyoshima responds sending Nagahama backwards, a left hook from Toyoshima lands clean, a huge right from Toyoshima uptop, Nagahama trying to fight off Toyoshima as the clicker goes, Toyoshima sill hunting a finish. Struggled to give Nagahama more than 3 rounds. He had his best success late on, but it wasn't close to enough We have a new champion!
Damn, with this card starting at 3:45am EST and supposed to have included a few prelims of 4 and 6 rounds apiece, with the broadcast set to end at 7am, I thought 5am would be a reasonable compromise to wake up and tune in. Turns out I missed the first half of the main event! It was still a very good watch but I could tell by how arm-weary they were that it was probably even better action in the first several rounds.
