What would be Harry Greb's absolute peak fighting weight, if he needed to weigh in within 24 hours of fighting time, and had, say... 1960s rules and referees?
I suspect given his style a massive weight cut would be a bad idea, and he didn't have the easiet time making 160Ibs.
If we transported the current weight classes into his era, then he would have found 168lbs very well suited to him.
Greb might have made 154 but he wouldnt have gotten down any lower. He was very stocky and had to kill himself to make 160. He was much more comfortable just coming in at his best weight and fighting bigger guys rather than trying to cut weight to gain a perceived advantage over smaller guys. That wouldnt have changed even in this era. Greb's game was built around speed and endurance. Killing yourself to make weight wouldnt help that.
168...SMW...he fights Canelo and slaps him silly for 12 rounds, but loses a wide UD. He couldn't KO Canelo, and that's basically the ONLY way Canelo loses anymore.
Sometimes when I compare eras, I think it fairest to do a halfway house, rather than giving complete advantage regarding rules, refs, gloves, etc. So when I consider Greb vs today's boxers, I imagine it taking place maybe late 60s.
I don't think greb could fight in the 60s because of how filthy he faught he'd get DQ'd every second fight
I think that he was a smart dirty fighter. By that I mean one who knew how to do it to his advantage.
They didn't create 24 hour weigh ins for fighters to start cutting weight to make the limit. They started them to create a safer environment for fighters to rehydrate and come into the ring not completely drained and more susceptible to injury related to dehydration. In other words, fighters have been cutting weight since the beginning of modern boxing and weighing in a bit dehydrated. This was because they would weigh in in the morning and fight at night from what I understand. I'd say 140 is completely out of the question and that 147 is more realistic. But probably for not very long. I could see Greb fighting from 154-160 for a really long time.
