Was reading breadmans usual q n a bit on ******* where he interacts with whoever's sent him letters that particular week...he was talking to someone about Ali and Liston and whether the fix was in and went on abit of a tangent about fighters who knew how to react when they were hurt and just refusing to be stopped...he happened to bring up my favourite of all time in the convo and it inspired this topic. Which fighters stand out to you in history as those with a cast iron Will... absolutely indomitable. Juan Manuel Marquez stands out to me...from memory he's been on his arse probably around 12 times in his career...and a few of those he was hurt...but Marquez when he's hurt..there's no clinching...there's no holding..he bit down on his gumshield and fought his way out of trouble...that's some intangible to have in a boxing ring..the sheer will to overcome and not be stopped add in his recuperative abilities While katsidis wasnt elite he hurt Marquez early in round 3...n it was a hard knockdown...how did Marquez respond...****in leathered him the rest of the round landing 93% of his power shots Which fighters in history also share this quality
As well as Marquez I would say Morales and Froch. All the type of fighters that become even more dangerous when hurt
I don't like froch but I can't say he wasn't a double hard *******..some of those punches he went through in that first groves fight...some blokes would still be starfished on the canvas now
I agree with you. Marquez was a very special fighter. Pin point accuracy, could land combinations and slot everyone of them in perfectly. Great fighter
Ali, Fury, Frazier, Corrales Quite a lot of fighters are willing to basically die in that ring, they don't know what quitting means. But boxing can be just as mental as it is physical. Duran quit...because he lost mentally against a superior boxer on the night.
Timothy Bradley. Fought with two broken ankles in the 1st Pacquiao fight through pure adrenaline and fought basically unconscious during his fight with Provo.
I miss him..he was brilliant... It'll take a special effort from a fighter to knock him off my number one slot
Calzaghe was relentless, when he was put down he would start swinging like a whirlwind. Povetkin seems to have a will of steel himself. Makabu seems to push through when hurt often due to his leaky defence but potent offence. Joe Smith Jr seems another decent shout but I think I want to see a few more fights out of him to determine that. I believe Golovkin is also tough as **** and permanently pressuring forward.
With you 10/10 on Marquez. Off the top of my head, Marvelous Marvin Hagler strikes me as that level of willful though I dont remember him ever having been knocked down...Mickey Ward is another who just had nary an ounce of give up in him when the chips were down. Sure I can think of a few more.
