Ali too, with the red velvet trunks and the white shoes with the red tassels. He was pretty that night

Surprised to see no love for Gentleman Jim's G string or the Papke thong.

No. Best in ring gear (presume we're not talking Panama Lewis') for me was Hagler's velvet trunks with high socks. The maroon of the early years through to the navy/light blue trim. Man just exuded cool in everything he did.

But for the perfect combination, it has to be the lime green/yellow of Joe against Ali's crimson/white and the oxblood gloves. That fight had everything and not just the fact it was the most seminal sporting event of its time (or most any other).

Aesthetically, it was perfect. Ali's conventional red with white trim suited his clean cut look. He was Sam Cooke. However bad he was, he always looked like the ideal boy your daughter would bring home. And while he was patently the less flamboyant of the two, Joe's snazzy trunks were in keeping with his Philly funkiness. He was Teddy Pendergrast before Teddy Pendergrast. It was like the Soul of the South meeting the Soul of the Streets.

It also had that left hook. The most aesthetically pleasing punch, and fall by Ali, I have ever seen. For a fight to have all the backstory this one had, plus that punch, it would have been a shame if it hadn't had the right gear. Everything came together that night.

Got that off my chest, didn't I?

    Great thread, by the way.

Though it doesn't tell us who hit harder? Marciano or Frazier? Perhaps that will come along another time, if we're lucky.

Not Favourite ever, but BHop’s trunks & gloves in the second Pascal fight looked good, maybe the push-ups helped

    Duran's Malborough shorts in Montreal.

Hagler in all his title fights for being a metronome of consistency in his preparation, fights and sartorial elegance - with the shaved head and goatee to boot.

Gatti and Ward in their first fight for looking like they stepped out of a 1940s fight film with their attire, particularly Gatti.

EDIT: Damn, that wasn't a championship fight, was it? Unless it's allowed based on that quote that they were 'fighting for the championship of each other'?

Duran again - against Ray Lampkin with the green and gold trunks and the crazy beard. He looked more fearsome than his performance... until the KO and the after-fight quotes, of course.

A little nod too, to Julius Francis; who made the most he could out of fighting Mike Tyson, even getting paid to put an advert for national newspaper on the sole of his boots.

Absolutely mesmerizing, that G string was. Most boxers were so befuddled they were KO's before the fight started.

    The rematch.

The buttocks were better than the boxing.
